Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
HA - Me either. No, the vinyl cutter works just like the old vector drawing plotters, only it uses a blade to cut the vinyl rather than a pen. You do have to pick out the unwanted parts by hand, but that doesn't take long. Once I get the Jeep wrapped, I plan on cutting my own trim graphics..... if I can finally decide what I want.

Can you post a picture? I don't think I know what you describing. (Vinyl Cutter)

OK, so that was a long read....

Nice work so far. Bigtime improvement. I'm just starting on mine, but I'm not going into it like a frame off. I have learned some things that may help. Thanks.

Yeah, well - I tend to talk a lot, and it spills over here as well.

Thanks - my initial intention was new seats and paint. Word of advice - don't reprint ANYTHING. Once you do, everything not repainted looks out of place, then you'll be where I am LOL

Glad I could be of some help :chug:

I will be repainting, but I'm going for a beat up military look, so it's ok if stuff isn't perfect.

I thought about that as well..... khaki seat covers, OD Green paint.... but decided not having served, I'd just go back to red. And a screaming red it will be LOL

Long time no speak - well, more like no progress...... Got a little done today. Have been mulling over wrapping rather than painting the Jeep. Helped a neighbor wrap his older Mercedes, and that's what got me to thinkin. After watching professional wrappers on youtube talk about how hard it is, and that only trained professionals can do it, that was the last straw. LOL. Got a small chunk of the color I'm lookin at in on Friday so I got to prepping a few pieces for vinyl. Figured since I have all the gauges all clean I'd start with the dash - get it wrapped this weekend and make sure I like the color. Took the glove box door off, and you'll never believe what was between the hinge and dash...... RUST!. Can you believe they painted the dash and glove box door after it was assembled?? Ok, sarcasm over - but that's what they did. Geez.

After taking the door off, it was a little rough - dings, scratches, etc...

5HnUxlk.jpg

So I sanded it smooth and hit it with a coat of paint for a nice smooth base for the vinyl.

While I was at it I hit the dash also. Well, that was dumb. Timing wise, anyway...... No wrapping those parts this weekend - paint has to be completely dry, so that's what it is doing - drying.

Soooo, while I was waiting for paint to dry, I finished fixing another dumb thing I did. Once I git the tub back on the frame, I started fitting the fiberglass fenders - and it looked as thought the shocks and shock mounts were gonna be in the way. Spent a good bit of time marking and cutting the nicest, purtiest notches out of the fenders you ever saw. Couple days after throwing away all the pieces of fiberglass I had cut out, I realized it wasn't necessary to do any cutting. fast forward to a couple weeks ago. After the pissedness wore off, I grabbed a couple pieces of thin perforated steel, cut out patches, and glassed 'em in.

Here's the new patch taped in place....

rI6nDuP.jpg

Working around the perimeter, I drilled holes so I could wire the patch in place

And here it is all wired up. I did get it glassed in, but didn't take pics.... Fail.

Ll1jHJu.jpg

I really didn't have to do all that, but I figure it might help reduce the amount of :dung: splashing up thru the cutouts. Not to mention I shouldn't have cut it out in the first place. Since I plan on bedlining the inside and underside of the fenders, it wont take too much cleanup to get it ready for that.

Didn't get much done this weekend, but at least some progress was made....

Now - to check on some drying paint.

I like that idea rather than just leaving the shock tower cutout open. :notworthy:

Good progress
Seems there should be three pics in your last post, if so I don't see them.

There were actually 5 pics - but I never see pics in post on my phone anymore. I can't even see the one I post.
I don't know how to post a link to a hosting site and make it show up on my phone. They show up when accessing the site they a web browser....... beats me.

I just got the "web view" button - still didn't show the pics. I have to go thru a web browser to see em

I really like the work on the gauges. I'll definitely be duplicating your work painting and cleaning the gauges.

Any tips on rolling the odometer? I'll be setting mine back to 0 when I'm done.

For any govt officials...mine also says exceeds mechanical gauges limitations, mileage unknown.

Thanks - you will be amazed at the difference just cleaning the glass makes.

I just went back thru my pics to see if I took any of the odometer surgery..... didn't have enough hands. Once you get the speedo head broken down, you will see the odometer number wheel is held in place by a small metal spring clip on one side. Once that is removed, shove the number wheel "axle" all the way to one side ( and of course I don't remember which side, but it will only come out one way) and lift it out. Now, I just started fiddling with turning the wheels to see what happened. I think you have to roll one backwards a bit, then it and the next will roll to zero. Move down one and repeat. Once you get the hang of it, it goes fast. Takes a few minutes to figure out the movement relationship. The hardest part is putting that d*mn spring clip back in. If you get into it and get hung up let me know - I'll open my crimps up and take some pics.

Ok - either that paint was ok or I got impatient - one or the other. I went ahead and wrapped the dash and glove box door tonight - took a few pics but indoors it just doesn't do the stuff justice. I looked the dash over and it has a few dings, dents, and tweaks in it, but I decided to leave em. If it were a Ferrari I would have sweated it - but it's a Jeep for Petes sake. Here's a couple till I get out in good light...

A small paintbrush, two bags of patience, and a soft place to sit. Need to order edge tape for sure!

Glad to see it behaves as well for me as it did for my neighbor. Now, I haven't quite figured out how to get the tub in the basement :chug:
