1979 Jeep CJ7 TH400 Automatic 258 I6 Quadratrac Amc 20 rear & Dana 30 front, 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires. Currently a Complete Custom Rebuild in progress.

Also I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, White, all stock with 4.0L. automatic, and police package. Best part of that is it came with leather seats! This package also has the NP242 Transfer Case, 8.25 rear end, and trailer towing package.
Anybody have any luck with painting galvanized metal? If so, what did uou use, and how long did it last? Thanks, Rod

I just did this so I will not claim it will work forever. Biggest problem I see id that the zink surface is too slick to hold paint and sand paper may not be a good idea. I used Klean-Strip 1-gal. Phosphoric Prep and Etch-GKPA30220 at The Home Depot to etch the surface. Spray it on , give it 1 minute and wash thoroughly. mix to directions for metal prep.

WARNING!!! this stuff is nasty! it burns your skin, eyes, hair, shoes, dog and anything else in the neighborhood. If I had to do more than a square foot or 2 I would not use it. BE CAREFUL!!!:poke:

make sure the surface is clean after use, I think this could attack the paint from under the back side. Baking soda and water will kill the acid.

Thanks IO. Everything I read on line said to use a waterbased latex paint. So I tried that. Didn't work. So now I'm stripping that off to repaint with an epoxy. :bang: By-the-way, this is a Jeep trailer for camping to match my CJ7 . Got it really cheap  so can't complain about it being galvanized metal. Here are some pictures so far. Rod

Used to paint galvanized sheet metal pretty regular. Cheapest and simplest method we used nearly everyday was to cut muriatic acid 50:50 with water. Apply it to the paintable surface with a 4" paint brush. Let sit for a while to etch the slick galvanized coating. Rinse with copious amounts of water (brushing with soda and water would work, too) to neutralize the acid. Dry, prime and paint!

Never had a problem with paint coming off.

Sounds like your almost you are almost to a bare metal situation. Sand the surface with at least 180 grit to break all surface. There is a Omni product that is reasonably priced to do the job. Omni is a PPG product and most ppg jobbers carry it. Omni MP171 (white) or MP172 (gray) is a self etching epoxy primer sealer. You can color coat as soon as it completely flash dries ,so no additional sanding. Good product.

One final picture before I move all of this to my build page:grinjeep:. The bottom is an under coat paint, the rest is automotive primer. In the next couple of days I will be finish sanding and then color and clear paint to match the Jeep. Thanks to all that replied. Rod :patriot:
