i Just had my carb rebuilt and tuned but now I am having some issues that I cannot understand. My Jeep is drinking about 1 gallon of gas in 5 minutes under idle. I have a gas can with a hose going to the fuel pump so I am accurate on the time and volume. I do not see any gas leaking anywhere. Would the fuel mixture being off even be capable of this? Not sure where to start. It is an 82 CJ8 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine and a motorcraft 2100 carb. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's a lot of gas, check your oil, your fuel pump may have a bad diaphram and dumping gas into the oil.

Thanks. I will check the oil but I hope it isn’t the fuel pump. I just put in a brand new Carter fuel pump today. Could be my luck I guess

How's your idle? Is it steady, or does it hunt for the idle? Have you checked your timing with a light and with a vacuum gauge?

If all of those are good, I would suggest to check for leaks around the base of the carb, spray some carb cleaner around the base while it's running, if it surges you've got a leak. Also, check your float bowl, make sure that the gasket on the top horn of the carb isn't leaking.

Well I checked the oil and I found the missing gas. I can't understand how/why I am going through fuel pumps. I had just replaced the one about 6 months ago and never ran the jeep. It was in the shop and then when I got it home I had a massive leak in the diaphragm and fuel was pouring out. I replaced that one and tested it and I guess it is bad again. Can I be that unlucky?

As for the idle, it is idling fine, nice and steady. I didn't check the timing but it was adjusted at the shop .
