thoughts of tranny change

I'm fairly certain that any auto Transmission is going to be longer than your T-176 , making driveshafts mods a must. Most auto boxes are bigger than manuals.

^^. What he said

A TF727 from an 80's full size Jeep will bolt up between your engine and a Dana 300 . There's a minor issue with one of the pumps or something like that sticking out the passenger side causing driveshaft interference unless you lift the Jeep and/or use a 2 piece driveshaft. I'm not 100% sure about the bolt pattern for the Transfer Case . It may be clocked differently for the NP2xx cases that the full size Jeeps use and the Dana 300 . Though when I pull the 727 out of my truck in the next month, I can tell you for sure. I think the 727 may be a couple of inches longer than the T-176

You can also find a lighter duty TF904 /909/999 in Wranglers (and maybe later CJs). It might be a little shorter but getting the right flex plate for the torque converter may be a little tricky.

The AW30-40 from the YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ/WJ will bolt up but it's computer controlled so getting it to run properly is an involved process. I'm not sure how the length compares.

Regardless, there's a good chance that any Transmission swap will result in driveshaft length changes. However, that's a cheap fix. Getting a driveshaft or two modified to fit is a lot cheaper than the rest of the swap.
