So I was driving my 84 CJ7 with a four cylinder to work today. Everything was great. Then out of nowhere I had issues with the throttle. It felt like something was jammed under the gas pedal. Would barely move. Pulled over and shut the engine off. And the pedal was moving freely. Thought to myself. Huh that’s weird. Starter the engine back up and it did it again. Could barely accelerate. Like as if it was in limp mode. Pulled back over and shut it off again. Pedal moves freely. Start her back up.... will barely move. Any ideas? I need to get the girl home tonight?

Is the linkage at the carb working correctly ? What carb is on it ?

Broken motor mount? Can you rev the engine when idling?

Vikingone if you are in need of some motor mounts, I ordered a set from Napa 4-5 years ago for my AMC 150 but never used them, then decided I wanted a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l after having a 4 cylinder some 30 some years. I'm never going to use them.

How long has the fuel filter been in use?
Gary

It’s gotta be something sticking. Drove her home and things were better. I could put the pedal to the floor at times. Then other times maybe half way. Then at times something would give and I could put it to the floor. Weird.

Sounds like your linkage on the carb may be binding somewhere. Check and make sure all the hardware is tight if you haven't already. Take the throttle cable off and move it by hand and see if everything moves freely. Take the air cleaner off and look down and make sure the butterfly valves open and close as they should.

I agree with others, it has to be a binding while the engine is torqued over. I did not see if you have checked your engine mounts.

I do have a Weber 32/36 laying around. Wonder if I should just put that on there

I had a Weber on mine and that was one of the best thing for improvement I ever did. Drove it another AMC 150 ,000 after that. Only problem was stopping on the side of a steep incline on a trail. Road or hiway not that critical.

I live in south Florida. No inclines lol. How hard was the swap

And I have the four cylinder engine. Is that an issue?

Not to hard. Mine was on a 4 cylinder AMC 150

Cap off the vacuum nips.
Make sure the throttle butterfly is not loose on the shaft.
Spray down the linkage with carb cleaner.
Lube linkage with a drop of oil.

There's nothing inside that carburetor that by design would prevent you from gettin WOT under any conditions. You definitely have something hanging the linkage under some as yet unidentified conditions, whether engine torque or body sway or something else we haven't thought of. The problem has nothing to do with any vacuum hoses.

Get the carburetor back on it but leave the air filter off and manually manipulate everything, trying to make it bind with the engine turned off. You'll find something that'll do it, I assure you... and when you do, you'll see why it happens and how to make it stop happening.
