Over the past week I've started hearing a ticking sound coming from the passenger side of my engine. Increases in volume with increase in RPM's. I've googled this and have come up with an exhaust leak but don't want to dive into that belief since 1) I really have no idea and 2) I've only google. Have any of you experienced anything along else lines?

1979 CJ5 . AMC 304 , 3 speed. Pipes split out to dual exhaust, not sure about the headers other than being told they're aftermarket.

Thanks in advance!

Could be a exhaust leak or a lifter, shouldn't be to hard to tell where its comming from.

Does it get better or worse when it warms up? If it's a header leak it will seal up after it warms up

I've had them that didn't so not always true.

If it is a lifter, possibly worn or clogged up with sludge, cleaning it out with a high detergent oil could help. Like a Rotella T 15w-40, run it for a short while, drain it and refill with the same. This can only help if the lifter is clogged.

A short piece of heater hose or garden hose used as a stethescope will let you find where the ticking is coming from.

Im betting exhaust leak. But that's not to rule out lifter chatter.
