I picked up a 1977 CJ5 and would like to put a tilt Column in the CJ5 , I have heard of using a Cherokee column on the later jeep wranglers can you use a Cherokee Column in a 77 CJ5 ?

have you taken mearurements and compared them? what about spline counts, do they match?

I put one in mine, walk in the park. 1997 Cherokee. got lucky and found one in the pyp with a key still in it. than you cash for clunkers. all the electrical waw plug and play except wipers and dimmer switch, both move up to the column and were no big deal. It is necessary to do a bit of welding on the steering shaft to change the end to match the column and remove the fire wall mount, 2 minutes with a die grinder, and kind of modify the existing fire wall mount. I thought it was well worth the effort, gave me a bit more room in the drivers seat and replaced the column that I was going to have to clean mud daubers and spiders out of the old one.

Thanks IOport51 I figured someone had done this and want to do it on mine, I knew numerous people did this with the new wranglers and it was simple but wasn't sure on the older models

Thanks Again

the only things I remember as complications are the new column is a bit longer but you have to cut and weld the shaft between the steering box and the column anyway to change out the end. and you need to drop the angle of the column through the fire wall a couple of degrees to clear the starter switch from the brake mount, I put a shim block in the fire wall mount about 1/2 inch thick to drop the column. once again , no big deal.

the best trick is to find a column with a key, it would have cost about as much to have the column re switched/ keyed as it did to buy it from the PYP.

I was told that s10 around 1993 will work too. I have an s10 in that year and looked at swapping it and they look the same.

the Cherokee wheel is just a GM unit but the cool part is that the steering wheel says "Jeep" on it.:D
