Tire shopping

For a CJ5 I would like to get a bit of off road look but would like to have it drive ok. I was thinking of the BF all terrain or the Bf mud terrain. For a street driver witch would be better. I had a set of each but 30 years ago. Would the mud still drive ok?

What size? I'm still running the old style BFG muds, but they're only a 30x9.5x15, they have worn very well, and I haven't had any issues running them as my every day tire, they make noise, but not so much that you can't hear yourself think. Hope that helps

I'm staying with 30-9.5-15. The old muds hummed but drove good and looked awesome. $40 more each not enough to worry about.

i am really liking my pro comp extreme a/t. they are quiet i have never been at a loss for traction that a more aggressive tire would have made a whole lot of difference they handle well and seem to be wearing slowly and evenly. they only make 31 and bigger though.

BFG A/T is a great tire. I'm run'n A/Ts in my avatar pic.
I was not impressed with the MT, as in the noise and pour wet road traction.
Much longer tread life with the A/T and super quiet.

If you're going to stick with BFGs then my vote is for the ATs for all around driving/wheeling. Not a very good mud tire but pretty good for every thing else. If you're considering other brands, I'm very pleased with my Goodyear MT/Rs. Great on and off road and even in the mud.

I have recently switched over to all-terrain from the mud type and it is and improvement on the street and in the rocks. I have had quite a few rocks go thru tires also, especially the sidewalls, so I would recommend a tougher tire that will last longer.

I use to have a set of MT BAJA Claws on my Cherokee when I lived in Colorado. There were excellent in the snow (Noticed you were in Canada ). Highway was good with a little noise. Handling was great, even at 80 to 90 mph. I would have liked a little more wear to them, but given the abuse I put them through, I can't complain. Off road they were everything I ever wanted. Where I am at now (Texas), I most likely will get a different tire. No snow, more highway, different type of off roading, mainly sand and rock.

never been a fan of BFG. been running 33" GY duratecs for 4yrs, no noise , never stuck snow or wheelin with my club. big fan

BFG ATs are great for a lot of things and they wear well; aired down I've found them th be very very good. Obviously mud is not a strong point but they'll do okay in a bit. I've also run the KM2s and found those great as well - slick on snowy road though. I run ATs currently for most everything and have a set of LTBs I swap on for the rough stuff.

I don't notice any real difference between the AT and the KM2 on the road so if you like the more aggressive look of the KM2 I think you'd be very happy with them on road.

As many have mentioned, BFG's are great tires, owned them all my life but, here is what I'm running now. Not too loud and do very well in the mud, and if I remember correctly, cost less than the BFGs. I'm very pleased with them. Cooper Tire & Rubber Company - Discoverer STT

Agreed.

I ran BFG AT's on my old XJ and loved them. Collapsible sidewalls made them turn into tank tracks when aired low. Great all around. My CJ came with KM's that are over 10 years old, have a lot of sidewall slices and chunks but still have thick rubber, no rot and hold air well. Tried looking for something else but I think I will have to go with KM2s since they are one of few that have tall and skinny which I like.
