This may seem like a silly question, but I recently purchased a '77 CJ5 with a AMC 304 and a 3 speed manual. The jeep has a 4" lift, and is running 33's, with what I think is the stock gears ( don't know the ratio ). What would happen if I went back down a size or 2, to a 31 or 32? would I get some low end back? Would it look funny? I like the way it looks but I don't think it has as much low end as it should (granted I have not taken it off road in 4wd yet, been busy). What do you think?:chug:

in the 77 Jeeps I would bet you have 4.10 gears. Dropping down a size or two makes a good amount of difference in you butt dyno and the gas mileage could go up a tad. I think a 4 inch lift will not look right with 31's though. 31's are good for 2.5 inch lift but that about it IMO.

I agree. Going down will give you better low end and improve mileage but will, in my opinion not look right.

I think Cjs look good on 31s, but 4 inches of lift may give you an open wheel well look, If it has lift shackles that is easy to fix, but it the springs are 4 inch then sooner or latter you are going have to replace them to get the look right.

No I think he has 3:73's. That's fine with V8 power.

Check the rear axle for the gear ratio, that will make it easier to determine what tire sze will work best. the 3 speed makes a big difference as well. I ran 33's in my TJ, but that was a 5 speed with 4:10's. If you have anything lower than 4:10's, on 33's with the 3 speed, you will lose a lot of low end. just my thoughts on this.
