Looking for thoughts or ideas on tool boxes/tool kits that you guys keep in your Jeep. I thought about getting an ammo can and filling it with the tools I might need, then I thought about the tool kits you can buy that are all nice and neat. Does anyone have a kit that they really like(and the tools are not low grade budget Chinese stuff - if they are Chinese do they actually work??).

How experienced are you with road-side repairs?
What parts will you carry. The parts you carry will dictate what tools you need.
Look at Sears for socket sets for starters.
Remember that ammo cans are sealed and any moisture in there will act like a humidor on the tools.

For the most part, I hate tool boxes and use tool rolls for almost everything. They pack in smaller places and there isn't any rattle. As for tools, Craftsman is still about the best bang for the buck even if the quality is far short of where it once was. That said, you can usually go to just about any pawn shop and find the old stuff really cheap.

Like LG stated above, what you want to carry will depend on your repair skills, your rig, and where and with whom you want to go wheeling. Do a search for trail tools on just about any Jeep related forum and you should get a pretty decent idea of where you want to go with this. And as for the cheap tools, a broken tool on the trail is no different than no tool except you wasted fuel/space getting it there.

Make sure whatever you store them in is well fastened down so it won't get bounced out or end up on your head if you tip your rig over or something like that. I would start with all the tire fix stuff and know how to use them along with a way to air up tires. Knowing a CJs weak points can help tell you what to bring as far as parts go. A well maintained rig is most important.

I got a bottle jack, along with a 4 way monkey wrench, an air comp with a plug repair kit so that area is covered. At this point, not really planning on carrying any spare parts. I'm not a hardcore wheeler, just like going to the middle on nowhere so I want to be somewhat prepared. My CJ has been quite reliable - gets good amount of love in the garage. THANKS FOR THE INPUT:notworthy:

Sears has returned to USA makers for their hand tools.
NO ONE ever saved a dime buy'n cheap tools--

I've always kept a military mechanics duffle bag. It's somewhat form fitting and quiet. It will hold all the basics, a socket set, a wrench set, screwdrivers, pliers, and a small container with misc nuts and bolts and a roll of stiff wire. Oh, and duct tape! ;) A pair of gloves and a rag inside help cushion any rattling.

This is a good thread... I'd like to hear more from others on this. I do like the idea of a canvas bag like PaRenegade shared. I have a similar Stanley bag for small jobs around the house that might be perfect for behind the seat or somewhere. Good read!

I just have wrench roll & a canvas military bag with

- 3/8th inch socket set (metric & fractional)
- ratcheting screw driver with Philips and flat heads
- a framing hammer that can double as a lever if necessary.
- 8 or 10 inches of heater hose + whatever those adapters are that make two hoses into one + a hand full of clamps.

Sooner or later, I'll pull the heater hose pieces from the bag. If I think a belt, a hose, whatever, might not make it, I put a new on before I start out.

Personally - and I don't hold anyone else to this standard - I feel if the Jeep doesn't stop and go on demand for a healthy margin above the expected duration of the outing, I haven't done my job.

Like my dad, I used to carry 1/3 of a mechanic's set with me on an outing. After so many uneventful excursions, I started leaving stuff at home.

I've used what I carry a couple of times, so I don't mind takin' 'em along.

I carry a fairly large pipe wrench. Great for encouraging things back into place as a wrench, pry bar, hammer. Sometimes I just hold it up, shake it and curse and things move back where they belong :)

Wow! How do you remember all that to write it down and who do you hire to carry it all :). I know who I'm staying close to on the trail.

Get a section of 12"X12"X.250 thick sheet of alum. so you have a base to sit that jack on in the soft stuff. ;)
Also, carry a few spare lug nuts--

I do have a check list. The best part of it is, in that rig, none of it is hung on the outside or in the bed. All the stuff resides in the wheel well tool boxes I made (think MB/GPW), the passenger seat tool box, in the engine bay/hood, or in the tire carrier. If only I could do the same in the JK---------------an ARB compressor is about the only thing you can fit under the hood in one of those.

The way I see it you cannot carry too many tools and parts on a Jeep trip.

I agree. Just having a little fun with duf. I think he's got a great list. I've found its the little stuff like brake line parts etc that can often be easy to carry but a huge help on the trail.

my list is very similar to duffers. i don't have quite as many spare parts or supplies as of now but I'm working on it. as of now i have a big box in the bed and another on the fender and my chainsaw and 5 gallon gas can is on the other fender but i am working on getting all my tools and parts under the hood on the spare tire carrier and in fender boxes. main differences are i always carry a sthil ms261 along with a gas can and bar oil machete military entrenching tool and a military pick also my axe is a single blade so i have a sledge also and a impact driver and drill with bits. oh and this is my load out in my daily driver. i add stuff as needed for whatever job I'm doing. i figure if i have enough tools to take the jeep apart and put it back together then i have almost enough.

Duffer, your list is missing a toothbrush and deodorant. :D

BTW: I own a 22 year old Harley Davidson. Trust me, you learn to pack tools anytime you're traveling.
