83 CJ5, 258cid manual trans, it's pretty much stock other than the tires.
i have an 83 CJ5 with trac-loc, i am in need of new rear axles but they all say that they fit quadra-trac rear difs? is there a difference? i am looking at replacing the two piece axle with a single but i'm not sure what to look for?
I know it has 54.5" wheel to wheel, 29 spline wide trac rear end. any suggestions regarding the best axle to get???

Trac-locs are Limited slip. Not good for hard wheeling and big tires.

The Quadra-trac is a Transfer Case .

Most of the big jeep parts guys have good 1 piece shafts.

The TracLoc diff makes no difference with axles but seams like the quadra track system does although I don't know why? Shop for 1 peice axle kits to fit 83 wide track with quadra track and you should be fine. The Quadra track may have a different offset with the differential thus different axle lengths than the normal Dana 20 or 300 T case.

The Quadra Track axles are offset like those for D18's-right side drop. The axles for Dana 20 /Dana 300 are centered.

okay, single axle vs. "free floating axle"

I have an org. 2pc axle, have heard single axle is better, then is a free floating axle the best? not sure what to do?

As stated the QuadraTrac has an offset rear output. You need a axle with an differential offset to the passenger side. They are not easy to find. Back before 1971 lots of Jeeps had the Dana 18 TCase. Both the Dana 18 and QuadraTrac were the only jeep transfer cases with an offset rear output.

What's wrong with your axles? Just the axle shafts? Whatever it is I would repair your axles instead of replacing them.
:chug:

Edit: to answer your question on full floating axles, these are very strong because the axle shafts don't support the wheel. They only experience the rotational force. Problem is CJs never came from the factory with full floating axles. Warn did make full floating kits but they are no longer available.

1 piece axles are the next best. They are not OEM either but they are easy to get for your CJ.
