I know this is gonna sound dumb, but here goes:

A couple months ago I took the tranny out.....
Set the broken mount and skid plate out of the way, and now that I'm putting it back together, the mount just doesnt seem right.

I have this diagram, but still seems to go together funny....

I am reading it correctly when I see the funny part of the mount with the large bolt and large rubber bushings on the right would be on the drivers side, right? That is the Tcase shown with the drive shaft above the mount....right?

To be honest, the day I first took it apart nearly 25 years ago, it seemed like a ridiculous design.... I'm not entirely sure the purpose of the bolt / large rubber bushing side of it all...

any help?
(kinda feel dumb throwing this up on here)

that looks like one of the typical engineered tranny mounts doomed to fail
and believe me not having a tranny tied down is a failure you do not want to see, err ever seen a engine flip?

anyway, one of the first things I like to do is to go to Napa and find a HD mount that fits the tranny, and then move the cross member so I can get it bolted down tight
sure saves on engine mount stress

I've always thought that extra bushing had questionable effectiveness. The diagram does show the large bushing on the driver side. The output yoke at the top of the diagram should be the rear of the case.

As the motor torques to the right, this bushing helps provide support the drivetrain by resisting rotation against the Transmission mount. I ran my 73CJ for many years without this bushing and did not experience a failure, but I now have one in place and it seems prudent to bolt it in properly. Seems I always have to make use of several lineup tools and prybars to get everything in place.

That's called the Transmission stabilizer bushing...and it has a purpose. Unfortunately, its' also the first bushing to fail because of wear and oil saturation.

well said Jim

did CJ7s with this setup come with a crossmember, or a skidplate? I think I've seen diagrams with both.. Mine has the skid plate, and didnt know if that was normal...

And apparently sometime during the last year I drove it, one of the tranny mount to T case bolts came out, and allowed the Tcase to move around a bit....Just enought movement to wear down the aluminum mount on the back end of the Transmission /tcase adapter housing. Now instead of it being flat across the surface, it is like a wedge. Like a 1/4 inch of metal is gone on one side. Since there is less metal surface, there is now less threadable depth in which to run the bolt into... I ran the bolts right through that surface and nutted them from the top...

I'm prob not explaining it very clearly, but anyone with that GM Turbo 400 /Qtrac case can possibly picture it....

AARG!! I am hoping it holds up.

"oil saturation"? ..... are you implying the Jeeps occasionally LEAK ?

There was one time, many many years ago, that EVERY possible fluid that could leak,,,,,,,WAS LEAKING...!!! It was an EPA nightmare!!

I call it self oiling of the undercarriage :D

Nither of my CJ's leak

bUt they both weep constantly. I thought it was to help keep the bottom from rusring

:laugh::notworthy::laugh::notworthy::laugh:

My CJ3b was doing this very thing only last year, I think it has some 7+ locations that hold fluid(or not) that were leaking, it took two of those garage drip pans to contain the mess.

this turned into a fairly funny thread....
