tranny stuck in 2nd

1980 CJ5 4 speed. I have had these jeep several months and twice it has gotten stuck in 2nd gear. PO says it happens once in a while and he showed me how to fix it. You have to take the shifter boot off and pull the shifter out, realign the shifter clogs and put it back together. Anyone else have this issue and is there a permanent fix?

I had the same issue. I bought two new pins where the shifter goes down in and it hasn't happened since. I think they were $15 for the kit from 4wd.com.

Do you mean the 2 pins that are on top of the Transmission that hold the shifter rod in. thanks

Yep, I think they are about $2 each. I bought a kit that had the boot, 2 pins and something else in it "can't remember", I looked for it on the website and couldn't find it. I'll look in the catalog tonight when I get home and see if I can find you a part number.

the T-176 in my J-10 did this. I replaced the shifter, the lolly pop looking thing at the bottom end was worn to the point that it would miss the notch when going for reverse.

I assume we are talking about a 176 right?

Yes I believe its a 176 and it seems to do it when I try to go into reverse.

X2 on IO's thoughts. But before you start looking for a shifter arm itself, try just replacing the spring and cap. You'll need it anyway if you do have to replace the shifter arm.

That's the kit I bought, along with the pins. Knock on wood it hasn't happens since.
