trans crossmember orientation

Hi guys,

Putting my toploader/Dana 20 back in with the AA Transmission mount. Ive painted the crossmember and frame AND I only had the jeep for a short time before tear down and I can't remember which way it goes in.

I do recall the Transmission being offset to the drivers side by an inch or so. It appears that the original Transmission mount had a support off to the drivers side as well.

The main thing I need to know is which side of the jeep gets the notched end of the crossmember. I honestly don't see the need for that notch after putting the crossmember onto the Transmission /tcase.

Well I hoisted the Transmission /tcase up with my cherry picker and I know how the crossmember goes in; that notch is for the flange that is part of the front cover plate/shift rod housing.

If someone could post a pic of their Transmission /Dana 20 showing how much room they have between the crossmember and the above mentioned flange I would really appreciate it. Although my crossmember looks like swiss cheese with all the factory holes in it, none of the ones that line up with the new mount will put the Transmission in the right spot. Im pretty sure I know where it needs to go from measuring my old Transmission , but a picture would help.

BTW this is a 73 CJ5 that had a 3 spd and Dana 20 in it.

hahah...funny.

Its an extension of the mating surface of the front cover plate that goes over the front output shaft.

If you were to look at the right side of the Transfer Case from the back, you would see where it extends off to the right of the tcase and kindof fits into the notch I mentioned in the crossmember.

I'll keep checking back here but in the mean time I'm going to use the measurements I took off the factory setup and throw everything in there....if the engine ends up in the wrong spot I'll pull it back out and move the tcase as needed.

...and here I thought the AA Transmission mount would locate my Transmission in the correct spot in turn locating the engine where it needed to be. Glad I marked some spots on the frame from where the AMC 304 was. Now I can REALLY say I've totally engineered my jeep's drivetrain from scratch!
