I have a 78 CJ7 with a 3sp manual Transmission . the Transfer Case is not divorced and is bad. My problem is the gearing in my jeep is too tall i have 33 inch tires and in low range it is still not low enough i am always on the clutch in the woods. My delema is get a new/rebuilt T20 and then replace the gears in the front and back, a job that i am going to have to pay someone to do and will be expensive to boot. Is there a Transfer Case i can buy that has a reduction that will make a big enough differerance to make it worth the money? my jeep is pretty stock and i do like the 3speed i am not going rock crawling soon i just want to bang around in the woods. Any help would be appreciated!

You never mentioned, what gears do you have?

You can get a kit for the Dana 20 that will change it from 2.03 to 3.15

that is essentially like taking 3.54 gears and having 5.38 gears... you have to do all the math, but I read something like that somewhere.

So, it is possible to do that to a Dana 20 and get you better in the woods... again, if you are at 2.73 or 3.31, you will moving your ratio accordingly.

All of your options can be planned out beforehand. Gear Ratio Calculator

The kit to put a lower low range in the Dana 20 is probably more expensive then having your gear ratios changed depending on how much or how little you can do yourself. The kit is about $900-$1,000 plus labor to install it.

I am unaware of another Transfer Case that will bolt onto your Transmission without an $500 adapter and some work. Well, a very rare 1980 IH Scout Dana 300 will but they are pricey when they go up for sale. Finding a complete T-176 /Dana 300 set up out of a junk jeep might be the quickest/cheapest/easiest route and it just take bolting stuff on except for the drive shaft mods and some other items like that.

I am not positive of the gears , i am just going by the stock info of that year. i havent had any problems so i havent taken them apart to look at it. I am guessing because they are so tall

On the back of your axle, on the right hand side next to the big round circle of the AMC20 , there is an indented hole... on the flat spot next to it, you will see a stamped in Letter or Letters.

If it is stock which I presume it is, you have narrow track axles and here are the codes and numbers borrowed from the jeeptech website.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to apologize, I had no idea the kit was over a grand already... last time I saw it, it was like 600 bucks, but that I guess was a while ago.

Even the Dana 300 is up to almost 800... dang.
