Hi all, I'm a newbie here and need some help with a Transmission problem. I have a T-150 with a Dana 20 Transfer Case . I've asked this question on another forum with no results. Hopefully someone here can help.
The noise is a low squeal with a slight vibration in first gear and reverse only. second and third are fine. The Transmission and Transfer Case are on the bench at this time, waiting for tools to arrive.

constant in first gear and reverse, but once in second it quits.

I am sure some one else will chime in soon enough(transmissions are not my specialty). I assume waiting on tools means that you don't have it apart yet? You may want to go ahead and get a new set of seals for it, possibly a rebuild kit, depending on how it looks. With a constant squeal, I would think it would be a bearing.

I have the same setup. I had a similar problem earlier this year. For me, it was T-150 bearings and a clutch bushing. Mechanically, it worked fine, but the whine was very concerning. Warning: once you solve this problem, you'll likely hear all the other noises that were previously drowned out. :-)

You're talking about front and rear main bearings or all of the bearings including the needle bearings? The clutch bushing? Would be the pilot bushing in the crankshaft?

In my case, I had someone else do the work. It is my understanding that all the bearings and synchros were replaced in the rebuild, plus I got a new clutch kit (yes, pilot bushing was shot). The new pilot bushing failed again after 500 miles, and that apparently killed some of the new front bearings as a result. Luckily, it was all repaired again at no additional cost to me.

When pilot bushing goes bad quickly there are 2 possibilities. Clutch assembly seriously out of balance or the input shaft is bent. Squeals are usually bearing noise.
A bent input will cause slight vibration that will tend to dissipate with speed. Bent input puts excessive pressure on the front bearing and the counter shaft. Bent input will produce a low squeal from the pocket bearings that should be most noticeable in lower gears. When in 3rd the pocket bearing does not spin therefore no squeal. Best bet pull input, take to machine shop and have them spin it to determine if it is bent.

Do not have an input shaft straightened. It could cause stress cracks and a new shaft is cheaper than straightening.

Most likely case is a bearing 1st and REV run off the same shift fork and bearing set, hence why you are only getting it in those gears and not 2nd or 3rd

Okay Gillmore, It's your fault that I'm now hearing every other noise my Jeep makes. :D It's a good thing for my Jeep, but bad thing for my wallet. I now hear a squeaking noise coming from the front passenger side brake as I drive. The Transmission and Transfer Case are nice and quiet though. and for the first time since 1992, I don't have any leaks......and yes they're both full. Thanks for the help everyone.
