transmission & transfer case

I just bought a 74 CJ5 with AMC 304 3spd sittin on 36" goodyears.
I went outside to put it in garage but it wouldnt budge it would act like the wheels were locked and would kill the engine but i could get out and push it then i put it in neutral and the darn thing took off. whats up with that? well i dont like that tranny anyway so does anyone know what would be the easiest upgrade for Transmission & Transfer Case would be?

Transfer Case should be a Dana 20 ; they are good so Id leave that.

Might try and find a factory four speed/T-18 . Its really just a 3spd with a granny first though so I dont think driving it around would feel much different. Someone else may chime in; I dont know the gear ratios of that Transmission .

Other than that there are lots of adapters where you can put many different transmissions in there.

Im a little confused on what happened. So you were idling, put it in gear but couldn't move? So you shut the engine off and you could then push it? Or you moved the shifter and then were able to push it?

Sounds like you might have a problem with the shift tower and the forks are engaging two gears at once.....?

You don't have twin sticks on the Transfer Case do you?

no i dont have two sticks. i left the jeep running got out and pushed it jus to c if the wheels would roll and they did so i got back in pushed the transfer stick while Transmission was still n neutral and the jeep took off.

hmmm....well I'm still thinking the same thing. Something is up with your shifter.

I would think maybe you just bumped the tcase into neutral except for you killing the engine because it wouldn't move.

Just read your post again; those tcase shifters (mine included) can be a little sloppy. Yours may have been stuck in a weird spot.

I'd keep playing with it and see if you can get a better idea of what happened. See if you can narrow it down to tcase or Transmission problem.

you were right it was stuck in one gear and i was trying to put it in another causing it to lug the engine down and die. i played with it till it finally went into neutral now everything seems to be fine.

Having 4 teens playing around in your Jeep is never a good thing. Sounds like it's time to put them to work helping you with it if they like messing with it so much.

I'm loading my uhaul so I keep parking the jeep on the lawn. I also keep leaving the keys in it; better stop that.

You guys think I could stuff the jeep in the uhual?

Im tempted to try. It would be a cool picture anyways. Just finished the locker and gears so I think if I backed the Uhual up to the curb and I drove off my yard I could crawl in there.

what Transmission do I have? 4 speed hooked up to a 4.0L with some kind of go between hook up kit
