1981 CJ5 - 258 inline six - essentially stock, except for mods below.
I've gotten a lot of good info from this forum and hope someone can help me out. I have a 1981 CJ5 that I got when my uncle past away. He liked to rock climb in colorado, I plan to use it hunting/etc in Arizona. It has a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline six which my nephew and I recently converted using a Howell efi kit. We have also installed a Summit HEI distributor and Hayden electric fan. It had been running good, but recently we've had some cold weather(i know-cold-arizona) and it has been dying when I pull up to a stop in the morning until the engine warms. Starts as soon as I turn the key, so something is signally it to cut power.

just wondering if anyone has thought on what I should check? Jeep is pretty much stock, except for what we did.

Thanks for the help!

It might be the idle air control valve, does it appear to have no idle speed? When you do a restart the computer it can reset it to normal. The Rochester 220 t.b.i. has a history of those going bad. Sometimes it just needs to be removed and have the carbon cleaned from it. It is located on the passenger side behind a four prong plug. If you purchase one, follow the instructions to set the pintle prior to installation.

thanks for the reply, however, I don't think the idle air control valve is the issue unless it was bad out of the box. The kit has only been on for 2-3 months and the jeep has been driven little as we've been working on replacing leaking gaskets. As for idle speed, I have not noticed any fluctuation, but I will need to check that again as I have been focused on the stall out situation.

another friend mentioned the temperature control sensor. Any thoughts on that beig the problem?

It might be the TPS (throttle position sensor) it might have a dead spot when you let off the throttle.

I'd call Howell they have very good custermer service.

Did you ever find out what was wrong?

To all, thanks for the comments. I have not had time to check any of these sugestions yet. To many Holiday activities to deal with first. Also discovered that the valve cover gasket I replaced still leaks, so I am going to get a better gasket for that. Luckily, it was not the oil pan gasket that was just replaced, since it is more difficult to work on.

I'll provide an update when I get the Howell issue resolved.

Thanks!
