i had a talk with some guys today at work about this subject. they where like nos is the cheapest bang for the buck. i think different.

you buy a bottle and you have to keep refilling it. that means when you refill it, it cost money. plus if you dont use the nos right it can be ugly. i saw a video of a brand new vette with nos and he didnt purge it right and it almost blew the intake thru the hood.

now a turbo, sure its alittle more money. but its always there, you dont have to hit no buttons or anything to turn it on, and you dont have to refill it. plus i think the sound of a turbo is sweet. this gets my vote.

so whats your guys thought on this subject.

I would have to go a little different way. A supercharger. The turbo takes time to spool, and is good for pulling power, or diesels. If you want power for get up and go in a gas engine, a supercharger is the way to go. Nos is only useful at the drag strip. That's my $.02

with newer cars there barely any turbo lag anymore. i use to have a daytona turbo z it was a 85. now that had bad turbo lag. one of my higher up managers has a wrx sti and that thing feels like it kicks in as soon as you hit the gas.

superchargers are cool but you lose alittle power to make power and if the belt breaks your screwed. but a big lung sticking out of a muscle car hood does look sweet.

If I was going with one or the other it would be the turbo, like you said, it's always there. NOS is for ricers.:D

It would be a bummer to try to pass a truck and realize you forgot to fill the NOS bottle.

funny you said that. i should of put it the right way. N.O.S not nos

The turbo lag is dependent on the vanes. The new turbo's have the VGT, Variable Geometry Turbo, which opens and closes the vanes depending on engine speed. Liberty still has a noticeable lag in it. And as far as losing the turbo, we have had the hose from the intercooler go out twice now, and there is a serious loss of power when that happens.

I agree with those 'some guys'. Nothing can add horse power cheaper the a good nitrous system. BUT, it is only a temporary HP increase. There is a good reason why many of the outlaw class draggers run 500+ shots of nitrous, it works. Heck, I ran a 250 shot on my CJ when I sand dragged, instant HP.

The draw back is, as was stated, if you use it all the time it can get depleted and expensive. It's not made for every day driving... :D

If you can't pass a truck, you shouldn't be on the road! Nitrous is made for drag racing, instant HP addition - not for everyday driving.

Don't lump a specific racing addition into the group superchargers and turbo's - the first is almost specifically for racing and the latter two for everyday (unless specifically tailored to racing) HP additions.

Just my .02

A turbo is, no contest.
A turbo you use everyday.
Figure out how long a bottle last, then figure the cost of using it everyday, like the turbo, befor ethe end of the year you coulda bought several turbo setups.

Turbo's have minimal lag now days, but are better top end.
Superchargers are always spooled and give you that instant grunt.

BTW, I've built more turbo setups than most performance shops. For a couple hundred I can turbo most cars, the real cost comes in the tuning.

BTW, the turbo's with a variable vein are awsome but sound terrible, like a jet engine at idle that, skreeching whistle.

I've never been a fan of nos, it reminds me of pushing the throttle on the carb of my gokart to get that extra gas to outrun my cousins, LOL.
It's all good until you hit the sparkplug.

I love Nitrous - we run it on one of our Outlaw cars (125/250/500 shot)... And we run a turbo on the other! Both run in the 7.5's. Just a different way of making horsepower... :)

When / if I get my CJ going again - you'll see it it... Easy Hp... :)

All depends on what you want to do, what motor and vehicle.

You need make sure the bottom end can handle the extra hp. Don't put one on a tired motor.

The only reason I would consider a turbo or N.O.S. on my CJ would be for snow, mud or sand running high RPMs.

A turbo will lag. Period. A supercharger is pumping at the slightest increase in RPM. I don't see many on the trails in the woods.

I would never consider anything other than a supercharger on a vehicle that sees any kind of trail use. theres no replacement for that instant power

i forgot to say that we where talking about cars and not trail rigs lol. for the trails i love my stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l :D
