i have a 79 CJ5 with a tilt and slide option, no it's really not the one amc
put on that model year. my turn indicator does not work and when i pull the
steering wheel off, i can see that the turn mechanism is broken. i got no clue
what this unit came out of and don't really know how to disassemble it to
get to the broken piece! any ideas??? thanks in advance... radman

Maybe some pic's might help? So we can see what you have.

Most tilts that are swapped into CJ's come from GM intermediates. Can you take a pic (as Longhorn asked) and also look on the turn signal plastic housing and give us a part number? We should be able to find one for you... :)

Once you pull the wheel you should be able to lift off the cam mechanism after you unplug the wires.

my problem is that i 1) don''t know how to post an attachment
2) have more parts in the way and can't get them off!
i know thats pretty lame but i'll keep trying to post a pic..file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/mark%20radulovich/Desktop/Jeep%20Steerin/DSC00924.JPGfile:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/mark%20radulovich/Desktop/Jeep%20Steerin/DSC00925.JPG

we'll see if that worked! radman

That is a GM column. The lock plate needs to be removed. It's mostly a two person job. There is a ring clip that fits in a slot in the steering shaft. You have to push DOWN on the lock plate and at the same time pry the small retaining ring out that holds the plate down (usually with a very small flat head screw driver). Then the plate will come off.

I drew red arrows pointing to the steel lock ring in your picture.

That's a GM column alright. Once you pull the lock plate and the horn, it will look like the pic I posted. That will be the turn signal mechanism.

as usual you guys rule!! is the turn indicator mechanism readily available?
i live in los angeles. i'll try to get my wife to help me.. wish me luck.. radman

go to any auto parts store and they have them. i work at advance auto and we have them. i dont think we have any stores out there. i know there is auto zones. if they cant find one for the jeep get one for like a 79 chevy truck or car.

thank you all very much.. the airtex part number will be very helpful..
again, you guys ALL rule. radman

all finished! local autoparts store had the entire assembly(including wiring)
for just over $30.00. that stupid little clip was a bit of a problem until i found
out that there is a tool for gm and amc columns! to less than 1 minute to
set the clip and about 5 more to reassemble! all works perfect now!!

again guys, a great big thanks for the help... radman

I have the same kind of column. It does not have the switch for the ignition part so I have a key for the column, and another for the ignition in the dash. any idea on the part number for the ignition switch so I can get rid of the extra switch?
Chuck

which switch do you want to replace? i bought my cj recently and the previous owner had removed the column switch. the dash switch can be found at crown manufacturing. i think they are in salt lake city and do NOT
sell retail. get part number from them and have local shop order you one.
if you are looking to remove the jeep switch then post a thread and you'll
find plenty of help in this forum.. good luck

Radman, I guess whoever had my jeep previously removed my switch from the column as well, I was just looking at the thread and recognized the pics as matching my own so I figured I would throw out the question about the column switch. I have a ignition switch in the dash, I found an exact duplicate at Autozone for $13. I had to meter out my turn signals as my wires did not match any diagrams I found on line even though it looked exactly like the pic that CJ posted, other than the wire colors that is.
Chuck

chuck, thanks for the autozone starter switch thought! $13.00 is a great price and because mine acts up; i'll try getting one today.
goofy switch needs to be released, slightly, to allow the engine to start!
starter will grind away until you release the key! ever heard of this?
again, thanks for the autozone idea.. radman
