Turn signal switch for '75 CJ

The '75 turn signal switch is mounted on the steering column pipe with a clamp and has a rubber wheel that is supposed to be a self canceling mechanism.

My stock switch works, but it is VERY sloppy and has absolutely NO feel to it. Can a stock switch be taken apart and freshened up, maybe by a good cleaning?

If not is one after market switch better than any other? I know I need a 7 wire switch.

The switch should have a model # on it. It should say SIG STAT or SIGNAL STAT with a model #.700, 800,900. They still sell these.

You may be able to take it apart and fix it. I haven't been able to find any parts for it. These were used on many older trucks. Especially in the 50s. If you know of any old junk yards that have these old trucks, you may find a used one for parts.

After getting my paws on a viable stock switch, just in case of a screw up, the switch was disassembled. Come to find out, there really isn't very much inside the stock switch box. An electrical component for the switch, a rubber wheel as a canceling device and the switch arm with a plastic cam device that works with the rubber wheel. The plastic cam that works with the rubber wheel is warn and needs to be refreshed. A little scraping, some polishing and we should be in business again.

The casting is made of some sort of pot metal and the paint seems to just fall off it. I quickly scratched all the black paint off the casting with nothing more than my fingernail. This seems to be the case with all of these switches I've seen. Is there a way to paint the casting in a way so it sticks?

A good etching primer should work. Use the primer then paint.

That casting is made of either Zinc or Alum.
Scrub it with scotchbrite and brake cleaner.
Then use your best rattle can-

It sure is a funky metal, it does seem odd that the factory paint wouldn't stick at all.
