So, I'm walking around outside and it's pretty dang cold for S GA. It's about 28F or so. I have on my leather duster. I'm 6' and it is just long enough to touch the top of my ankles so it is a pretty long coat.

A lady stops me and asks if I know "how many cows had to die to make my coat?" HUh? I'm actually speechless for once! "What did you say?" I ask. She then proceeds to ask the question again. Now the old CJ's brain clicks into super charged mode, inject a shot of nitrous and accelerates, ciphers for a moment and then decides on a recourse...

"None." I reply.

"Well that coat is leather, cows had to die."

"No, it's not from a cow, leather can be from any dead animal. This is a different flesh from a different dead animal!"

"That's even worse! What is that coat made of!"

"As I said, no cows were harmed in the making of this coat, it is the leather from the aftermath of gathering the fur for my other coat when we harvested all the baby seal pups!. So this coat did NOT cause any the death of any cows!"

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I was then able to shop without any more interruptions from Miss PETA...

Disclaimer: The coat is leather and I have had it for 15 years and I don't have the faintest idea how many cows died for the coat but I imagine they all tasted great!

cows are made to eat. whats the problem with using more than just the meat?

FWIW, have a leather coat and leather seats in my Durango.

I agree. If the cow is already dead to use as food, why not use its skin. I work with a guy whose son has tatoos all over his body. He said if he outlives his son, he will skin him and frame the artwork. Why throw away something useful.

Speaking of PETA.....

This was a topic at another forum I visit.

PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk - News Story - WPTZ Plattsburgh

WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tracy Reiman

Executive Vice President

My response:

Oh Holy ****! **** no!!

What do they think we are? ****ing cows? OMG!

We get a little bit of milk for just a little bit of time and they want us to sell it? Do I have black spots on my white <-BAD WORD->? Is my name Bessie??

I can see their point about being humane to animals. But I have been to the dairy farm and helped my friends do their chores, including hooking them up to the milking machine. There is nothing inhumane about it. Because you have to be gentle and if you dont get it on right, it will hurt the cow and you also wont get milk. Therefore you hook it up right.

Now, I am sure none of you guys have used a breast pump.

Maybe your wives have. I dont know. But I would almost promise you that unless they were paying big money for that breast milk, there is NO woman in her right mind that would hook up to the pump for any reason other than giving her child milk.

Besides, the process would have to be like blood donations. The milk tested. Health screenings.

PETA is ****ing nuts.

PETA sucks donkey balls!

Lets think about this...

No eating meat. (I shudder at the thought) because its cruel to animals and they are important because they are living creatures...

Well. My sons 3rd grade science book says that plants are living creatures too. No plants for the ****ing PETA people! Let them starve!

I really can see their point about the baby seals getting clubbed or whatever. But damnit, who the **** is clubbing a cow?

And I cant help it if they were served a steak that was too rare one time and now they dont eat meat.

But to want breast milk? How would that work? Not good. Everyones breast milk tastes different.

Damn. Them people are stupid.

I bet that when push came to shove and PETA was told to put up the breast milk from their 2 million or so members that they would just do like they always do - side step the issue. I say send all the women in PETA a breast pump and start a milkin'!!!

PETA is a quasi organization that glamorizes issues so they can be in the spotlight. They are some what of an extremist group.

Unfortunately, because of the way PETA handles itself all the actual good it does is usually lost in the stupid sensationalistic way it goes about dramatizing it's issues. PETA does, as a core group do some great things. I just wish they would focus on the actual good it can do and not verify the stupid things it does by sending letters and making statements like the one you quoted.

Someone (x) told me that peta isnt about helping animals but against humans. For some reason, I think he might be right...

I just reccomended banning Susie because of making her husband get rid of his old tools on another thread,(jokingly of course) but after reading all the ******** words in her response to PETA, I withdraw my reccomendation.:notworthy:

Susie is definitely a keeper! Speaks her mind and lets you know how she feels... Don't need to guess what she is about! :chug:

PETA can be a real pain in the a** sometimes. No..MOST of the time. I don't want to ever have to give up my steak.
