Weber 38 choke plate position (bad cold starts)

I got my Weber 38 back from Weber recently after it needed the whole choke unit replaced. They told me it was properly adjusted from the factory and I shouldn't need to adjust the choke or other settings. If the jeep hasn't been started in a while it will take a LONG time to start, like 20 seconds or sometimes doesn't seem to want to start at all. If I put my hand over the choke plates (completely cutting of the air intake) it will fire right up. My question is, are the choke plates supposed to be closing tighter than they are in this picture, or do I have another issue? Will they close tighter just rotating the choke cap?

There is a measurement for setting the plate. A specific distance btwn the plate edge and air horn, either in the front or back. Check your application...maybe google it, find out what its supposed to be, they are not supposed to be completely closed after engine starts, would cause a too rich condition. If the carb does not use a choke pull off, or any other means to preset the gap, then the by turning the stat, in the correct direction, could close the plates more. Are you pumping the carb several times before trying to start?

Weber finally got back to me. I tried adjusting it again - had to tourque it down a LOT and they would get to *almost* closed. After that, it wouldn't disengage the fast idle after warming up. The Weber tech said he suspects the throttle plates are not properly aligned or otherwise the issue and I have to send it back... again.

I've been thinking about getting a weber 38 for my jeep. But know reading your post I'm not so sure. How long have you had it? And what other if any problems have you had?

I've had it since late september. When I installed it, it worked great and added a lot of pep to the engine over the older Weber 34 that was in there. The problems and having to return it twice are a big disappointment. If I had my money back to do it over again I'd probably try one of the Holley's that seem to be popular with most people on the board.
