what are the advantages and disadvantages of welding the spider gears.

Well welding is cheap.

Welding is like a spool, not good for a DD.

A Detroit will roll through a corner. Gas it in the corner and it will lock up. That gets interesting in a CJ5 on icy roads.

^^that pretty well covers it^^
What are you using this jeep for?

When the spiders are welded (commonly referred to as lincoln locked), it will grip all the time so it will squeal some when you turn corners on road and may wear tires a little faster.

I don't know anything about ice or rain her in AZ:D so I can't help you there.

I think you'll find it wears the tires a lot faster than a open dif or even a detroit locker, particularly when driven on paved roads.
