My NEW set of Headman Headers leak around the flange on a couple of tubes. Since I did a little redesign to clear my steering column I can't send them back. I have both a gas welder & mig. Which would you use? I am leaning toward the mig because of less heat applied to the flange limiting a warping issue.

your right on track. use as little hea as possible and go slow. the headers i just put on are just tached on the outside and welded on the inside.

anyway you go you will need to have the flange re surfaced or it will leak.

You will get a lot less stress from the oxyacetylene than the mig.

To bad you dont have a TIG wielder they work awsome for what you need to do. I'm with IO use the oxyacetylene.

consider brazing from the inside low temperature bronze.

I still think you will end up un flat.

The flanges already are not flat. Laid a file across the surface and was surprised. I can resurface so just need to close the opening.

Thanks everyone,

Following the advice on here and reading a little more on the net, I braze weld the header today. Everything went fine. There was no warping of the flange and the port cleaned up nicely with a flat file. Cleaned up the other two flange openings as the seals were min. Should have a good seal on the header now!

Installed the header yesterday. Everything is good. To assure I had a flat surface on the flange after welding and flat filing, I use a bodyman's speedboard with 90 grit paper. Worked great. You could see any low spots, a couple of very small ones, and with a bit of sanding the surface was slick, shiny & flat.
