I did a search and didn't see any other threads like this one. Heres my thought for this thread, to create a list of different modifications, up grades etc. not specific to any part of the Jeep just overall and to every part. My hopes is this will help myself and other members to get some ideas and directions to go, find the best rear end to go with, motor, transfer mods, suspension, front end, lockers, muffler bearings LOL anything you have done big or small that was an improvement over what you had.

For me so far the 4" lift with the 33" tires Super Swampers TSL's good aggresive tread at a good price. gave it a great look and some nice clearence. The lift is a rough country, not a bad lift but you do get what you pay for with this lift.

Floor Pans from JC Whitney did all the pans in the Jeep including cargo area. Little difficult to install lots of trimming, pounding, and welding past sheet metal expierence helpful,

Rhino Lined the interior, very easy to do and does a great job at sealing all the seams from the pan instal.

Future plans as of now

Get the Transfer Case rebuilt twin stick it "Dana 20 case"
Up grade rear end still trying to figure out a direction to go with it

Well for me so far.........

3-4 inch spring lift, HEI MSD, swapped out AMC 304 for a 360, Edelbrock performer series carb, Honda Prelude seats (full wrap type)....still pluggin away at the electrical....getting everything working.

Future upgrades include.......

Dana 20 one piece axles with locker in rear only, New soft top with doors, Full rhino interior and EXTERIOR , found a 401 out of an old wagoneer so I might put that in after I kill the 360 :notworthy:

I love power and going fast straight up :chug:.....close as I can get to being an astronaut:D

We should have quiet a few different lists depending on what you do with your jeep. For the rocky trails I run the important things have been:

4" lift 33' tires, good bumpers and sliders, roll cage, tie rod and draglink flip, U-bolt flip, winch, and TBI, along with 1 piece axles and locker in the 20 and stronger axles and bigger u-joints and a LSD in the front 30, and a twin stick in the 300.

future plans are for some new corbeau seats and harnesses and a 8.8 to take the place of the AMC20 . Maybe someday 35's when the 33's wear out.

Good List OD, whats the U-bolt flip? what lockers are you running?

It is a Jeep, I started moding it as soon as the PO handed me the keys and I changed the fob

Other than getting rid of the Presto-:dung: ignition, rebuilding the steering box, and painting the rig, I have been redoing all of the PO's botched mods with lots to go. Too big of a list to go through.

I run a detroit soft locker in the back and a detroit truetrac Limited slip in the front.

The u-bolt flip keeps your u-bolts from hanging down so far.
heres a pic front and rear

  • Hella H4 Headlights w/relays
  • Old Man Emu 2 1/2 inch YJ spring lift - perfect for 31-32 tires or for a SOA in the future and an excellent ride
  • MPI and 4.0 head with Banks headers on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l - coming this winter and plan to document on this site - great upgrade for better driveability and more power.
  • Yukon 1 piece axles for the AMC20

Will the axels help keep the rear end together on the 20, I have heard a lot of bad things about this rear end "which I have in mine also" and am looking to start getting things in place to repair or replace when I tear mine out, been doing a lot of research on the 44 as a replacement

Great Pics OD, these are some good examples of easy inexpensive upgrades that us new jeepers may not think of. Your running the AMC20 rear end if I remember right? is the soft locker a little easier on the rear?

Soft locker,is just what detroit calls there lockers. The 4x4 world just says detriot locker.
My 20 has been doing well for me for 5 years now but I live by "less throttle, more finesse" But sometimes I just have to hear the V8 roar.

I love my detroits,
I am also a person who does not believe in the skinny pedal. I run smaller stuff than most I run with, A Dana 30 /44 set up out here is considered light by many but I still go every where they do and seem to come out at the end of the trail with no breakage which I cannot say about a lot of the guys running bigger stuff. Big axles does not mean no breakage, I find a lot of guys use big equipment as an excuse for poor driving abilities.
I will also pulla winch line bafore a lot of guys will, I didi learn very early on that I hate the sound of metal snapping.

The AMC20 gets a bad rap, but is actually a very good axle. The general opinion I've seen regarding the AMC20 is that with one piece axles it can handle 35 inch tires without a problem. Maybe another thread to discuss the AMC20 and its pros and cons is in order so as not to take over this thread. Read this AMC 20 Axle - Tech Articles - JP Magazine and do a search, there is plenty of info on this axle.

Zuni That was a great read on the 20 axle thanks for that link, this is some of the info I was hoping this thread would produce, just to really give us new comers and even some of the more expierenced jeeps ideas to improve with out having to think of it on our own :chug:

I have a two barrel carburetor where there was once a one. I have a 2 inch skyjacker suspension and a 2 inch body lifts. The fenders flairs help keep the mud off the windshield. I built my own front bumper, because I needed one to hold the Warn 8000. I replaced the steel gas tank with a plastic gas tank. Rhino coat the floorboards.
Right now my favorite upgrade is the hydraulic brake light switch so I never have to mess with the original switch again.
I chained my engine back to the skid plate because I found that when I hit something a bit too hard that the engine would move forward on the mounts just enough to drive the fan blade into the radiator.:o

I won’t get into the still to do, I have about a grand worth of parts on the living room floor and that just gets me started.
