What automatic transmission will work on 304 motor

It's a chevy tranny, but they have to be for the AMC 304 ...I have the GM Turbo 400 in mine, and I believe it's the only auto available for the CJ. In the Waggys, however, they started putting the Chrysler 727 in them in the later years. I do believe you may have to change your Transfer Case to either the Qtrac, or I believe some came with the Dana 300 if you can find one of those. Why do you want to change??

Will the turbo 350 work the reason I won't to change it is I do like Standards anymore and the ole lady can't drive it and it would save me money that way I don't have to build her one

The TH350 will not work, the only one available for the AMC 304 is the GM Turbo 400 and it has to be from a AMC 304 or another AMC V8, and those only came with the QuadraTrac t-cases. This change will also force you to change your rear axle because the output from the Qtrac is on the passenger side. Now I don't know what you have for a Transfer Case now, but if you have a Dana 300 , I think there is an adapter to go to a GM Turbo 400 and then you would not have to change the rear axle. Now the other thing about the GM Turbo 400 and whatever Transfer Case you use, is that it's longer than the manual tranny you have now, so you will have to change both driveshafts as well..

The GM Turbo 400 may be a good choice. They can be had with the AMC I6/V8 bolt pattern up front for a direct bolt in; just don’t forget to get the right flex plate for your motor. I know some GM Turbo 400 were set up for a Dana 20 but I’m not sure off hand what all the applications were; the 1972 & 1973 bull nose Commandos had them. Adaptors can also be had for the tail shaft if needed, of course adaptors mean “money”, but at least you can make it work.

That's right, you could get the Dana 20 on the automatic in the Commandos, and a lot of those had the AMC 304 . In fact there's one sitting in a local salvage yard near me... but, I still have my eye on getting that whole Commando for myself from that yard later this spring... :D

Since your on one tons Im assuming you have at least 4" of lift on it. you can bolt a 727 to the 360, then throw a Dana 300 onto the 727. that will allow you to keep your rear centered. The other snag on the 727 300 combo is the Front drive shaft can be tight to the front pan. Now hopefully if you have the ones tons you have outboarded and not narrowed them. that will help get the shaft away from the pan. With 4" of lift it will normally work.
Check out this article on it.

That's some good info there, I knew I'd seen a 300 on a 727 before! My J20 has the 360/727/NP Transfer Case .. it could very well someday be the next driveline in my CJ, except my wife has her eye on it lately for her gardening business so, we'll see, I've seen plenty of J20 trucks for sale lately that would be good donors.. :D

I've got j-10 axles under one of my CJ's and plan on doing the waggy 44 set up under my other project will be powered by a 360/727/300.

The 80's J trucks come with the NP208 pretty much exclusively. I haven't seen any trucks that use the full time NP229 that was in the Wagoneer.

The Dana 300 bolts up just fine to the 727 with no modification, though the driveshaft clearance issues is there if you don't lift the CJ.

If you want to bolt up the 727 to a AMC 304 , make sure you get the correctly balanced flex plate. You can't use one from a 360 or 401.

Thanks, derf, and I see you're in Cedar Rapids... about 2-1/2 hrs away from me, we'll have to get together some time.. are you a member of JOCCI out of Des Moines, by chance? I registered on their forum but haven't joined yet.. been thinking about it though, about the only club in the state I think..
