Tried to figure this out today..... im dyin here.....Just bought a 71 CJ5 , it supposes to have a V6 odd fire "Dauntless Buick 225 V6 ". Checked the #'s head: B-1262204-a Block: 1261785 Can't seem to find them, something close but no cigar. The "A" suffix might denote undersized main and con-rod bearings, no idea 'bout the prefix "B". The Numbers are clear on both, no mistaking them. Sure it has the ac delco (buick) HEI, but that would fit on the 225. I'm not sure if it is a 225 "Dauntless Buick 225 V6 " because I went to get plugs for it and go 44S gapped at .03 w/ washer seats....got home pulled the plug and they were well worn R44TSX gapped at .060 w/ tapered seat. Head is tapperd others had NO CHANCE of fitting. Kicker!! Only app I can find for the R$$TSX is the 4 banger 80-83, also the old "well used" 8mm wires were set up for odd fire....could this be a V6 231? Or some "sale transition" monster? Man selling told me something 'bout he could "prove" that this Jeep was on the assembly line when AMC did the deal....Haven't checked the Transmission or any other numbers exceept VIN.... Has a Rochester duel jet carb also......Renegade where you @???? Can any one figure this out????:notworthy: THE END> That was my first novel, tell me what you think hahahahaha

Pull the HEI cap and look at the contacts, the odd and even fire cap are different.

This site explains the differences -->> HEI's EXPOSED

231's prior to '77 were still odd-fire. '77 was a mixed bag of odd and even fire. So it could be a 225 with a factory HEI swap from an early 231.

Dauntless 225 V6/Buick 231 Oddfire « Earlycj5.com

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your block indicates that it is a 1979 196/3.2 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 which should be even fire.

Look halfway down the third page, which is numbered page 40.

The 196/3.2 block could be bored to 231/3.8 specs in a re-build.

The jeep is 41 years old so who knows for sure...

Man this thing is a mystery rapped in a inigma, rolled in SAT "trick question" hahahaha

Checked the HEI it's odd fire!?!? Great info CJ....Thanks for everything.:notworthy:

Yeah thats it incammando!! I couldn't find the head# on that awesome list you provided though....dang weird!!!! :notworthy:

Fixed the rad leak and got him runnin' today ....carb was way out of whack. Never messed with a rochester before I'm a Harley man, myself. Fiddled with it long e-nuf to get some where.....gonna have to study up on it...hahaha

Sure would like to know for sure...the QUEST goes on!!!!!

Twice bitten (Harley & Jeep), Once shot.....(married) ahhahahahaha

Can't find this stupid head #!!! Is there any other way?? ( to tell what power plant is in this thing)

Have done tune up already...fumbled through it not knowing the power plant.....know its odd fire so that rules out 196/3.2 (right) Prob a "rebuild"....huh?

Just one of those guys who "Has to know!" Thats all dude....

Been working on the brakes but am gettin ready to get the electrical working. Tested Temp sending unit (BAD) need a new one.....one BIG prob.......The ." WHAT ENGINE IS THIS??" game show has flopped!!! hahaha Think I'm gonna just order one for a 231 buick.....and pray.
Been spinning my wheels for a second now...auto parts stores no help....
