What kind of Jeep should I look for?

Hi there all,

I thought it would be fun to get an old jeep to use on the farm. Pull equipment/trailers and such around, maybe plow in the winter. What I woudl like is something inexpensive but functional. Have a tractor, but want something smaller that can carry a passenger - blueberry fields across the street are a mile up an unpaved road. What years/models would be best?

Your liable to get a different answer from every member here!
Honestley I would keep it pretty open as to the year and look for the cleanest and most original I could find. Personally I might lean away from the 80's era because of the smog issues associated with.

Every jeep built before 1972 has a Transfer Case you can get a PTO for.
the ability to use a PTO would be kewl on a farm Jeep and many PTO tools were madefor use with jeeps. Just would need to search for them.

Humm...I like BajaEdition and Longhorns idea of the earlier models and they would make a good choice, I have a 64 CJ3b and it is more fun do drive around in as long as you are not thinking about going down the highway or such. Can't picture it being very effective pulling a plow either and would stick with the tractor there, would work fine with the trailers provided they are not too big. The early Jeeps brakes are barely capable of stopping the Jeep itself let alone much of a trailer, but slow speeds and kept off the highway any of the early CJ5 , -3A or B, -2A's would be good fun on the farm.

As long as you don’t put too much emphasis on the inexpensive thing, you should be OK.
Otherwise, inexpensive, pulls a plow, carries a passenger? I’m thinking Donkey cart. And there is the fertilizer to consider also.

Tough to say a specific year. I would shy away from a 4cly. My old CJ2B 4cyl would do about 45mph. But if you found one for $100 from a little old lady always sheded it, I would jump on it. All depends on how much you want to invest in time or cash. Depends on what you define inexpensive is. Lots of $500 pickups out there. Not too many Jeeps for $500 that don't need $1000 in repairs.
