I just picked up an 83 CJ7 , with no rust :D But the reason it isn't rusted is because the original owner was very diligent in spraying in the old school undercoating everywhere. In the tub, and under side as well. It is some sort of petroleum based substance, a little like tar. I would like to put in a spray in bedliner, but I don't know if I can get all of this stuff off, and the spray liner would have terrible adhesion to the undercoating. What should I try? :bang:

youre lucky!! that u dont have any rust

i have undercoat on my 77 and it is shot try goof off then hit it with a steam Jenny (goof off will work i do not know about the steam Jenny but try it anyways!!!! and use a putty knife with the goof off it will come off like butter

I haven't used it, but I came across this last night in a catalog -- Under Gone Undercoating Remover Aerosol 16 oz

I have a bit of a leak in the brake master cylinder cap. Brake fluid seems to also do a good job at removing undercoating.

Aircraft stripper and a putty knife, you can find both at a local auto store.
Of use a torch to heat it then scrape it off with a putty knife, smells bad, wear a chemical type respirator, and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Both of those have been the tried and true methods for removal.

A wire wheel can be used but is messy and takes time.

Try this stuff seen here:

This is by far the easiest method I've seen.

The trick will be to find something that removes the undercoat and not the paint.
