I,ve been reading all the threads i can ( or maybe not?) I' getting small backfire and has stalled twice ont he interstate
i have new E3 plugs, Accel wires, Accel coil, BWD rotor (all they had) and cap( store brand oreillys )...adjusted choke, poured No smoke as well as lucas fuel, new fuel filter, All emissions has been bypassed, see no signs of manifold leak and have done the test by spraying starting fluid on various hoses etc. to check for vacuum leaks.

One thing im thinking that is next is the ICM.

I have noticed performance has increased with the new installs, one thing that has happened in the past is my (better than me ) mechanic has said that the timing was advanced "all the way up" and he set it to 8....but thats been maybe 2 months ago.....and he didnt notice anything when i dropped by this monday (only there 10 min )
The threads I've read most have pointed towards the timing, ICM, and the above upgrades that i have made.

new Distributor? new ICM? different thread to read?

Love to hear that I need to get a new tool for this......just need excuse to head to SEARS :D

in advance thank you

greg

Do you still have the original style small distributor cap?

If so, try thr team rush upgrade to a large diameter ford 2 piece cap and rotor.

I hear that the small cap has crossfiring issues stock, and with more spark energy available now , that problem can surface.

Stalling on the interstate is not my idea of fun! Does not sound like a timing problem to me if it quits going down the highway, what does it take to get it running again? does it just die completely and roll to a stop? then restart or is it cutting out and then running again while going down the road?

I saved the team rush but havent read it yet.......will read it tonight....is that also a dist replace? A1 Cardone $50

it started right back up......let off gas while in traffic

looking around while running i noticed this crack on the header and it did sound like it was coming from that area.....i ordered a exhaust manifold right after......to get rid of the headers....and look at the bolts and washers :wtf: so if it is that i might as well start rebuilding or replacing the stuff that needs to come off to get to the headers???

So it did not die on the interstate but while idleing in traffic? I guess nowadays you could be on the interstate and idling.

I vote for the team rush upgrade , just on general principals. The header crack needs to go , regardless. The back fire problem I have no good input but it would not surprise me to hear that one of these two things cleared it. You don't need a new distributer, that is the best part of the upgrade on 78 and up. You just need to change the cap wires and the coil and if the cost of the coil keeps you from doing it you can hold off on the coil too. It is just a good tune up. pluge, cap , rotor, and wires. I am a fan of the TFI coil. The stock ECM is ok but a MSD 6 is a cool thing too. I have not tried the GM HEI module yet. I think it was the best money I ever spent on the pow/peso scale.

YES the team rush on the to-do list....the thread i read even gave me part #s and pics:D
TFI ignition upgrade - Jeepz.com

msd 6 ok that will slide right in the OEM spot?

while im taking all this stuff off i could get the intake cleaned ( or whatever those shops do to them ) and go get a mc2100.....there is a lot of stuff on that side that can be done that could improve the performance as well as address the problem

you think new distributor as well? because of emissions has been terminated do i look for a different year dist. ?

msd 6 ok that will slide right in the OEM spot? disregard i was thinking the blaster 2 lol

15 years you get used to it plus you get to see all kind of things......and these are this year

reading on that now.....so when i take the headers off the intake looks like it has to come off any way ( so new gasket ) is there a way to tell if the intake had ( or has) a leak?

pow/peso scale.[/QUOTE]

searched but didnt come up with this what is that ???

the barter system is still alive and kicking.....going tues to visit a contact.....rekeying a ford pickup truck....in payment i get a used exhaust manifold and a windshield washer nozzle....so at least $ wise im $200 ahead

Looking for vacuum leak is easily done by spraying a flamable mist on the possible leak areas, gaskets usually, the engine speed will increase when the vapor in drawn in by the vacuum into the cylinders. I like carb cleaner but break cleaner or gas in a spray bottle work also. Is it dangerous?? it has the potential to turn a rather dull day into a day to remember. Be careful! wear glasses, it will not generally burst into flames when sprayed on a hot exhaust but I would be extra careful around the crack in the header and keep an extinguisher, at very least a garden hose, close at hand.

as far as the leak i looked for any discoloration...around the bolts and the head
