If a friend gave you a complete AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine? I hate to not get it. On the other hand I don't really need it. Mine runs great. I also have a 350 block.
ditch the 350 and part out the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l while i search for a 4.0 then build an mpfi 4.9 high compression stroker i6's all the way for crawling baby. more torque earlier is always better.
If you don't need it find some one that does. those things take up too much shop space. I have a AMC 304 setting in my shop I got a "really good deal on" that I wish was in someone else's shop right now.
That 350 has been moved so many times I've lost count. It was the motor I learned to drive in a truck my Dad owned. I just can't seem to part with it. I'd like to rebuild/modify the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . (very long term project) but since my jeep is so dependable I'm just not a fan of hot rodding mudriding stuff any more.

Ditch the 350 or find another non-jeep to put it in; keep your jeep, jeep. The AMC/Jeep I-6 is such a torque monster in the low end the 350 isn’t even in the same league. There is a reason the Cummins diesels we all know and love are an I-6. As always, I give all the accolades to the SBC but they don’t belong in a CJ “general purpose” Jeep. Just my Opinion.
Would you or your friend be willing to donate or barter with a Jeeper in need? I'm currently without a vehicle and the CJ needs a "new" lump. I have a clean pair of full hard doors I can offer. :/ or maybe PM me with a price you'd be looking for. PCB is a bit of a ways away but I could meet half way or whatever if its worth it. Let me know what you think.

Ok let look at this, stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 2bbl. is 196 ft. lbs @ 2000 rpms, stock 350 2bbl. was 250 ft. lbs. @ 2200 rpms.
That's all I have to say.
Sorry for the high jack.
Ah, ok. I was just saying that I'm without a car at the moment and need an engine for the CJ but I'm strapped for cash. I'd be willing to make a trade or a deal if the engine is in decent condition.

I'm with Old Dog on this one.........the I-6 is a great little motor no question , but the SBC in many available combinations is I believe a far better motor..........On the AMC I-6 motors I see guys spending tons of money putting high compression heads & stroker cranks in them to build more torque & power while the SBC will do that right out of the box.??
I'm using a 90 Corvette Tuned port speed density motor in my next CJ6 project.....
ECM controlled but done so using the very minimum wiring harness.
On the Dyno , Right off Idle @ 1500 rpm's it makes over 300 ft lbs of torque while only making around 100 HP........max torque of 350+ is at 3000 rpm while Peak HP of about 250 is at about 3600 rpm's. These unique numbers is what GM had to do with the TPI motors back in the early 90's to make them fuel compliant........
I'm also using a GM 700R4 4-speed auto behind it with 30% OD in 4th , Atlas 3.8 TC , running 4.56 gears in the back..........Off road it will be more than capable with early stable torque and lots of gear multiplication........on road it will cruise at 70 mph while getting 22-25 mpg very easily.
I will not argue the qualities of a SBC, I would not, however, replace a good running AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with one. When and if I build the next toy The SBC will be a major possibility.
Remember guys, don't trash any machine. I can honestly say there are even parts of Chrysler's I like.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to trash the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , it's a great engine.
I was just pointing out that the 350 does in fact have just as much (more really) bottom end torque.
By the way those numbers are from Chilton and are both for 1978 motors.

41mag. Back to your ?, I would keep it in case something bad ever happens to the engine you have now. Or pass in along to the other guy that needs it. Jeep Karma as Pete put it.

Yes I could pass it along to someone who needs it. My original question got blown way out of proportion. My present motor runs like a sewing machine. In fact today I was out running errands in the rain and spun my tires in second gear. I'm not going to put the V8 in my jeep. There again cause my six runs so good. My friend bought two jeeps. He got one running and has another (real bad shape) along with the original six in it. He said I could have the motor if I wanted. That was my original question. I think I'm gonna go get it and put it on an engine stand in my garage. then just piddle around with it.

yea as you know (you've been here awhile) that happens around here sometimes.
Sorry if I started the off subject stuff. Us old guys have a hard time staying on subject.
