Does anyone have any idea what this wire is? It's red and it's coming out of the main wire loom that goes back to the driver side corner of the jeep.

Obviously one end of it is gone.

You might want to follow that red wire to see where it goes. Make sure there is not voltage coming from it as it is red, if it does check for a fuse to it. It might go to the choke relay.

Hmmmm. But this wire is back by the tail lights?

O.K., that would eliminate it being from the choke relay. Trace it back to its source anyway.

It's odd. All my lights work fine etc. The end coming out of the connector you see there is cut clean. Can't imagine what this would have been for.

I assume it cannot be my fuel sending unit wire can it?

Strange one-Back buy the tail lights. Is that 'rite'?
Maybe side marker, backup ???
Is it 'hot'?
Ck with ign on(run position)and off.

Strange indeed. Comes right out of the loom with everything else.

I'll definitely check it with a meter and see what it does and when, or try...

Better view of loom...

Fuel sending unit wire is pink and in the bundle that goes back to the tail lights. Last year I ran all new wires from the under dash plug back to the lights. I also ran a dedicated ground for the rear lights and the fuel sending unit.

Do your back up lights work? There is a red wire that goes to a 2 wire connector that has red and white/ with black trace wires for the back up lights. I have ours taped off and marked since the switch in the Transmission has a problem where it fits into the Transmission . The back up light wire is sure in the bundle you are talking about, but it is the white w/ trace. The red wire actually loops through that connector and provides a hot to a lighter plug. I cut that part off. If this wire is hot when the ignition is on, then it might be the part that goes to the lighter plug. Something to check....:D

Every time I figure out what a wire is I put marker on it. Just a piece of white electrical tape and a description. This has helped me a lot. ;)

looking at the diagram IF all the other wires are going to the tail lights I would say you were right about it being the fuel tank sending unit. It should run to the gage. The diagram shows these are 5 wires . white/grey, white/green, green, white and red.

So this is back under the drivers side rear light. Now I am thinking this IS your fuel sending unit wire. Some replacement sending units have red wires instead of pink...I think ours does....and the sending unit ground was black.

Hmmm... Well all my lights and markers work perfectly as does my cig lighter.

I'll hook a bulb with a ground to this and see if it lights up. If so then who knows. If not then it's probably safe to put to the sender isn't it?

Do you have a trailer hitch on your jeep? Can you tell what the big lumpy end is all about? Where would a hard top dome light get it's power from?

Well I do but it's not wired "yet". I wondered about the hard top but there's no indication so far that this jeep has ever had one.

I can't imagine why it would have this connector in this location if it were for that purpose.

I see NO other wires besides this one under there for a sender. The ground wire was screwed in the frame on a crossmember. But no trace of other wires exist.

IIRC-no CJ ever came pre-wired for a trailer. Been real NICE if they did-:D
My SWAG on this wire lead. It's the power lead for the fuel sender.

What kind of volts should I expect if it IS the fuel wire?

I disconnected the red wire from the sending unit and measured the voltage with the ignition on and got 9.44 volts dc with about 12.65 volts at the battery.......Now our fuel gauge has a mind of its own, but I know its wired correctly.....Hope this helps! :)

Gotcha. Well that's a lot more than I imagined but I'm electrically challenged.
