What's this wire?

What's this wire?
OK, well this one definitely pulses. I wondered why in the world it was doing that, but now that makes sense.

If this were not the correct wire, would I just be applying power to the sending unit? Still don't see how the gauge would possibly work if this wire wasn't connected to it.

The sending unit has a variable rheostat on it(like a volume control)that is connected to the float inside the gas tank. The voltage the gauge reads will change as the fuel level changes.
The gauge will not work without a power supply from the sender.
HH-THX for the memory shake. I had forgotten to mention the 'pulse' deal.

A connector. Thought that might be the case.

Jeep gauges are faulty SOB's, it is very possible that someone in the far distant past ran a new wire to the gauge. If it pulses you know what it is. tape it off and hide it away, one wrong move and the cat hair size wires in your gauges will go "POOF", never to return. It's happened thousands of times.

Okay. This wire is actually pink. It pulses. It is dead unless key is on.

It's the fuel sender wire for sure.
