I found a 74 CJ5 in a pick in pull and it has highback seats. I thought they started sometime in the late 70s? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of switching to highbacks at some point in my 73, just to make the seats more comfortable and for shoulder belts. I've heard you have to fab up some brackets, so this one might have had homemade (I couldn't tell from all the snow). I might end up going back and yanking out the seats just cause, but it depends on how much they want for them. I'd definitely have to get them recovered.

On a side note it also had a Levi (Edition) 's rear seat. I thought those were pretty hard to come by?

I believe high backs started in 76

Hard to come by in good condition since this vehicle is in the JY id imagine the levis rear isnt in good condition

Thanks for the answers. The seat is open to the elements, but the cover is still intact. But it'll need to be recovered anyway. I might pick it up just for the bracket and frame.

1980 was the first year the factory installed high back seats in CJ's

They offered blue, tan, and desert beige in denim vinyl

Were they an option? My 80 CJ7 has low back seats.
I think they were. I have an 80 Jeep brochure at the house. I think I saw pics with low backs and hibacks, Ill have to look when I get home.

this makes sense, our 77 has low backs and is bone stock other than the front bumper and the tires.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I have a question that I believe is applies to this discussion. I have a 79 CJ5 that has high back seats. I cant verify that the Jeep came from the factory with them but they do match the dash pad and the hardware and rails appear to be correct. The unique thing with these seats is that they have the word "Jeep" printed on them over and over again. I have been around jeeps for years and I have never seen any like them. Does anyone know if these original to the 79?

87-90 YJ seats most likely those years share the same (or similar raher) hiback frames and padding. Snap a pic.

By the description those sound like early Yj seats. This isnt the best pic but you can see the "Jeep" print all over if you squint just right. :D

Pete, where was that when I was up there after seats for my jeep? HAHA i needed an early YJ seat and you sent me home with a late YJ seat, tsk tsk:cool:

Looks like I am going to have to join a YJ group or sell my jeep. All this time I thought I was a purest. Thanks to all of you who responded, that is what I like the most about this forum

There are seats from that era that have Cj embossed in the headrest.

Yes

I like the high backs but didn't want to stray too far from original. I would appreciate seeing a picture of what the optional 1980 high backs look like so I can do some shopping around.
:notworthy:

my 78 and 79 CJ7 's both had high backs that sure looked original
