Will not start

Can any of you help with my cj? It's a 77 I can't find out why it won't turn out, the battery is fine. But the moment I charge it and place back in the jeep it dies. It was perfectly fine about a month ago. Now it just dies

Also how much would a new axle cost?

Okay, so you have a good battery and charge it up. When you put it back in the jeep and try to start it what happens? Does the engine crank over?

You can test the starter with a jumper cable. Have someone in the jeep turn the key to run. Connect the large cable from the starter solenoid that goes to the starter to the battery. As long as the starter and battery are good it should start.
If that works it could be the starter solenoid. 12 volts on the smaller blue wire should activate the starter solenoid. If you never get 12 volts there it could be the key switch but that is not as likely.

Thanks ill try that when i get home. And well it used to start. Now it only cranks when it is still getting power through cables from another car. Other than that it is completely silent. The radio does turn on and so do my lights. And I am pretty sure that the battery will be dead by tomorrow.

After this I need to fix the power steering pump. The brake fluid leak. The fact that it doesn't mark gas. And the horrible scratch noise it makes every once in a while when I am driving it. A lot of work. But it shall get done I need to find a mechanic that can do this

Disconnect one battery terminal.

Have you load tested the Battery by itself?..........may have a dead cell that goes direct to ground........Happens all the time.

If Tarry is right then disconnecting the battery won't help. Tomorrow the battery will still be dead. If you can't get a load test today disconnect the battery overnight as a test.

Disconnecting the battery will help determine if there is a short circut draining the battery.

Well guys, I actually have two extra fully charged batteries laying around, also I tried switching the batteries from the land rover and the land rover turned on with the battery I had in the jeep and the jeep still did not turn on with the one from the rover.

The next thing down the line would be to check all the connections leading to the starter. Like battery terminal connectors, wires, and the fusible links coming off the battery end of the starter relay. If you have a good battery, something is preventing from getting that juice to the starter, this could be just a weak connection. There is also bypassing the relay by putting a jumper from the battery positive to the "S" terminal on that relay.

Sounds like we are in agreement.

A few tests such as jumpering the solenoid with a good charge on the battery should tell us a lot.
