In have an 84 CJ7 and when the wipers go on they go back and forth fine but they stop in the verticle position. The do not stop to the passenger side like they should. Anyone know the issue? Wiring...motor? Thanks!

I can't remember hearing about an issue like that one before. I would think that if there is no binding in the linkage it would be in the motor unit. Perhaps a disassembly might be in order.

A replacement motor does not come with a crank arm, you have to pull the old one off and put it on the new motor. I would suggest that the motor was replaced and the arm is 180 deg out.:D

Im not sure if I understand you right. Do you mean they stop in the vertical location and no longer move until you pull on them? That could be binding.
Or do they keep moving but just don't continue to sweep the other direction as far as they should? That is an adjustment. If you remove the wiper arm it could be that the arm was installed so it wasn't lined up right. This could cause the wiper to swing further one way than the other. The post the wiper arm fits on has splines. If it is off just one spline it makes a big difference on how far the wiper goes each direction. If it's only off a little bit then loosen the motor. There is free play and you can move the motor side to side a bit. then tighten the motor down again.

they seem to operate fine... they sound ok and two speeds both operate. but when I turn them off they stop in the vertical position. when turned on they sweep right to left.

Oh, okay, since they operate fine, your problem is the motor. It should be replaced. Inside the motor is a switch to make sure the motor stops when the wiper is out of the way. That switch is your problem. You'd think you could repair the motor but if you need to replace the switch I don't know where you would find a replacement.

I think the motor is fine. it goes around and stops at the end of the stroke, thats all it does. If the switch was not working it would stop in the middle of the stroke, wherever it was turned off.:D

When you say go left, does this say they travel in the right direction?
I still say it is a matter of timing, pull the motor and move the arm 180 degrees.:chug:

Agreed. Just turn them off and adjust the linkage to where the windshield wipers are down and out of the way.

I would like to retract my earlier statement that the motor is bad.
There is still some confusion on what is going on (by myself included).

So they go all the way to the right and all the way to the left.
They operate fine when the motor is on. That's what I understand from the above quote.
But when they are turned off they don't stop toward the right. This is an electrical problem. Here's the switch wiring.

High speed works. Low speed works. When you turn off the wipers power goes through the wire marked "park". This keeps the motor running until the wipers are at one extreme toward the passenger. At that time another switch in the motor cuts off power to the motor and the motor stops.
To troubleshoot check for voltage on the black "park" wire. If there isn't any voltage your problem is the switch. That is what I now think is your problem. Yes, that's my final answer. Your switch is bad.

That is IF I understand your problem correctly. If it runs fine but when you turn off the wipers and they stop wherever they happen to be then the problem is the switch. It is possible that the black "park" wire is broken but that is much less likely than a bad switch.

If the switch was not working it would stop in the middle of the stroke, wherever it was turned off.:D
^ ^ ^ isn't this exactly what is happening?

if it is stopping at the extreme up swing of the stroke then the linkage is 180 out..if it is stopping in the middle of the stroke then either the motor or the switch could be the problem

Thanks guys, problem solved. I think everyone was on the right track here... I fixed the arm and it was 180 out which was the cure. however when screwing the motor back to the mounting plate I got a few sparks between the wrench and the screw, so obviously some electrical bugs to work out as well! I just made a neighborhood test lap and all worked great
