In 1976 they changed the windshield frame. The tops are wider, so soft and hard tops will have to pair with that model frame. The mounts are different on the bottom as well, the defrost are not the same....
Early CJs are interchangeable to some degree as it is not uncommon to see a 3A windshield on a 2A even though the distance from the top of hood to top of windshield on the a is 2” taller on the 3A over the 2A but there is enough slop in a top to do it. I’m not sure what the width is of the 2A-3A windshields but from 1955 to 1975 they were 59” wide with the windshield sitting at a 90 degree angle to the hood. 1976 & up CJs had a 55” wide windshield and they leaned backwards to be more aerodynamic. The CJ7 series started in 1976.
So I shouldn't Have a problem mounting this frame to my 73 5 even though its from a 79 7. As long as it will mount I'm fine with it b/c its in pristine condition no rust and the glass is real clean. I haven't seen it in person but have gotten lots of pics. I can pick it up for 90 bucks in 6 days. The cheapest glass guy I could find was going to be 170 installed and my frame has a bit of a rust issue like the rest of the jeep.
yea i noticed that can i use the newer windshield and just have it mounted on the inside or can i move to outside. I got a few more days before i have to decide to get it I just want to make sure i can use it.
Just purchased a new frame for my "82" CJ7 . As mentioned above the wiper motor placement is different and if I remember correctly the hinge mounts are different also.
I will check my books tonight & get back tomorrow if no one else chimes in.
Internet hasn't made it to where I live yet.
Sorry for not getting back earlier.
Can't say for sure what the difference is but, what I have found is they show one frame for the years 69-75 and a different one for years 76-86.
I think a tape measure is your best friend at this point.
Also check defroster ports and wiper mounting to make sure they don't hang you up..
