Winter maintance/projects

Alright, here in Pa. it's cold enough to pull the Jeep in the garage for the winter and start some projects on it. First thing is to pull the front and rear diff covers and change the fluids, never checked this since I bought it. What do you guys think of synthetic gear lube? I also need to check tranny and Transfer Case fluids. I never used anything but synthetic in my 2004 Silverado, I'm not sure about doing the same to my CJ, although I am running Royal Purple break in oil in the new AMC 304 .

You realize that you just opened a can o' worms, right? Everyone's got their own opinion about synthetics vs conventional oil products.

My opinion, with 30 plus years on probably stock gaskets, and there has been synthetic fluids in any of that stuff before, I personnally would NOT change over to full synthetics. Synthetic fluids have a way of finding weak points in gaskets that conventional fluids don't. In other words, if it doesn't leak now, and you decide to switch over to full synthetics, you may find leaks that weren't there before.

What EB said, Especially about the synthetics vs conventional oil products part. should be OK with blend though.

I have to agree with eb.

I would keep running the synthetic in the "new" AMC 304 , but leave the rest conventional untill rebuild time.

Thanks guys, didn't mean to open a can. Convensional was what I was leaning towards anyway. Like most old jeeps, she likes to mark her territory anyway. Convensional is cheaper anyway. I put it in the motor at the engine builders suggestion.
