Hello, I’m currently in the process of building/ restoring a ‘81 CJ7 . I’m in college for autobody repair so I don’t have a whole bunch of money floating around. I took my CJ on a Sunday drive and stopped and got some groceries. When I came out, it would not start from the key, so I jumped the solenoid with some pliers, got home and it wouldn’t shut off from the key. I replaced the ignition switch and now it will shut off from the key but still will not start. I’ve come to the decision to install a push button start. I installed a momentary push button switch using 10 gauge wire. I ran one wire to the positive battery post and the other wire to the “S” terminal on the new solenoid. I turn the key to the run position and all I get is cricketts. I plan to rewire the Jeep and rebuild the steering column once summer hits and I can work more. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Sam

Wow! You are understanding wiring and low voltage to boot!

I'm impressed. Most would not know how to jump a solenoid and go from the S terminal.

We will get this straightened out.

Thanks! I’m trying to figure out why my solenoid won’t engage the starter with my push button set up, all the searches I have done have said to simply put one wire on 12v and the other wire on the “S” terminal. What could be the reason this isn’t working?
Thanks!

dazedandconfused, is your battery fully charged? Is your starter motor seized? Is your solenoid well grounded? Is your pushbutton switch rated for several amps? Is it possible that your solenoid took a dump coincidentally with all this? If you can hear it clack but the engine won't start, that's pretty likely.

i know this thread is a few months old but i don't see any updates

i have to agree with TD in the post above me. i think your solenoid took a :dung:. try replacing it first i think they are only about 10 bucks at advance auto
