Hello All,
I have recently bought a 1980 CJ5 that has some mods (lift and tires) but it was as-is. This is my first jeep project and I'm new to the forum. My question is with regards to the wiring. There is quite a nest under the dash and nearly nothing works. I am looking for a wiring diagram to help diagnose the problems.
On a side note, is there a way to decode the VIN to determine the tranny, tcase, axles etc..?

Cheers,
Beardy

There is a 3 page diagram in the Haynes Jeep CJ Manual. I bought a diagram for my '86 from a Chilton Manual. You should be able to find a few more options online. Also online thru a few CJ forums pages are a few improvements to be made to the oem wiring, like the "Team Rush Upgrade", additional wiring to the ground system, and a few other changes under the hood.

Here's what it came with originally:

AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6 w/ a Carter 2 Barrel carb
T-176 Transmission w/ a Dana 300 Transfer Case

That does not mean that's what's in it now...

Best way to know what's in it, is to crawl under it. Post some pictures and there are many folks on this forum that will be happy to chime in!

I have both a Jeep manual and the Haynes. Both have wiring diagrams. I'd suggest ordering both, as they both offer a wealth of information. While you're waiting on them, I'd suggest looking at your local library to see if they have a copy of the Haynes or Chilton. Mine didn't, but I was looking for info on a 73. They did have a manual for my 2010 F150 though. But there's no way I'd be able to return the book in the same condition as I checked it out. You should see the grease marks on mine! Which is why I suggested just buying them.

Thanks a million guys! As a newbie to this forum, I am pleasantly surprised by the quick and helpful responses. I intend to get you some photos as soon as it gets warm enough here to be outside that long:)
Cheers,
Beardy
