Ok guys, need some help! I have a 85 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , all of a sudden it will not stay running!! It starts up and idles for a few seconds and then dies! I am trying to figure out where to start looking for the problem. It has run fine since I bought it. It already has all smog :dung: off. When I idle it up it sounds like a miss, when it dies it burps through the carb. Any ideas???

Two thoughts come to mind -- either timing has become retarded (no pun intended...) or your choke flap is not opening. I'd start with the choke, then maybe try bumping up the timing a few degrees. Reading the plugs may help to tell you how your fuel trim is, too.

With all the problems these carbs have I would start there. I would recommend a rebuild to start.

Check the choke as mentioned, should have a measurable gap when closed between the choke plate and air horn..... and engine running ( cold ) and the choke plate should not be completely closed. If it idled great, then all of a sudden began idling poorly then I would wonder about water in the fuel/carb bowl or if trash may have entered the carb. I would also look and verify that all vacuum lines are connected and in good condition, to include the PVC. Also as mentioned, a fresh rebuild...if done correctly is always a good thing. Well after some looking when i got home yesterday, it started right up and idled. Then we some sparking going on at the starter solenoid, one of the wire had broke that runs to the coil pack. A cheap ring terminal later and all is well again!! Thanks for the suggestions!!
