'81 CJ 7 Named Rosie 4 cylinder 2.5L GM 151 dana 300 tc t18, '59 CJ 5 named Ocho also 4 cylinder same scenario as Rosie do not have a clue. I am a plant guy that is addicted to jeeps
What can I do to fix this problem I am having? my 1981 CJ7 wont shift into 4 high but it will go into 4low forcefully but will not drive in 4 low. I have the GM 151 4 cylinder with stock Transmission and tcase. this just started this weekend.

Ck oil levels.
Hubs locked?
You can be moving to engage 4HI.
Only shift when move'n in a straight line.
LG

The hubs are unlocked at the moment. I lock them once I have shifted into 4wheel drive. I did get it to go into 4high while moving but have not had any luck since.

I have not checked the oil levels yet but will do when I get home.

Hubs MUST be locked first!

LG

good to know. what happens if front hubs are locked in 2high. Forgive my ignorance.

Nut'n much--
Front axles, drive shaft turn-
I leave my hubs locked in bad weather and anytime I'm off-road.
NEVER/EVER shift to 4LOW while moving-You'll bust the t'case.
Get those oil levels ck'd(axles, tranny and t'case)ASAP
Start a maintenance log book.
Get a factory shop manual-ASAP.

View attachment 17898 the two red circles in the photo are showing the two rods are offset. Is this right? It looks out of whack to me

what is a good factory shop manual? and would Oreilly's Auto parts have it?

for 4low I am always stopped and try to be on as flat a ground as possible.

Sometimes, you need to back up 5-10 feet to take the torque load off the drivetrain.

Collins Bros has the real FSM

Haynes or Chilton leave out allot of details-But, they will get you started.
Haynes has theirs on sale for less that $18.00 'rite' now.
You want 85W90 std gear oil for the driveline(not engine).
LG

Ok so when I get home and check the oil levels, say they are full, I lock the hubs, shift the tranny in neutral, disengage the clutch, shift into 4 low or high and it should work right. If I still have problems with the jeep not moving in 4low what do I do? What do I do if I can't get it into 4 high or low?

Lock hubs-Move jeep a few feet to engage driveline--
No need to put tranny in "N" to engage 4wd.
Just push down on the clutch and shift the t'case.
When was the last time you ck'd the clutch peddle free play? You only want about 1-1 1/4" is all.
As the clutch wears-You lose freeplay.
LG

haven't checked clutch peddle movement, but last summer I replaced the master and slave cylinders for the clutch, so it has little free play

You have a hydro clutch-You can't adjust FP. Only can be done on mechanical linkage.
2-3 mph is walk'n speed.
LG

Thanks guys for the advice did not get to the jeep tonight. Had to help with the kiddos may get to it tomorrow
