Wont shift into 4 wheel

Wont shift into 4 wheel
I will second the advice to get that manual from Collins Bros. I got the Haynes first and was disappointed. It is expensive; just got mine 2 weeks ago for around $100 but well worth it. It is VERY extensive, including tons of troubleshooting information. I reference mine just about any time I mess with my Jeep.

I even got it in 2 days....although I'm also in Texas.

So I locked the hubs tried to shift into 4low no go, constant pressure rolling slow nothing same with 4high. Put the tcase in 2high and tried to spin the front driveshaft with my hand and it wouldn't budge. Now what? It still drives in 2high and will go into neutral.

Yes I did. And I was in first gear and would roll forward push in the clutch and while still rolling I would try to shift into 4wheel and nothing. I backed up 20' just to be sure and relieve pressure on drivetrain and still nothing

I did everything I was told to and no luck

Did you ck oil levels?
DANG-------Wish you were closer, so I could ck it 'hands-on'.
Confirm you have ck'd the t'case shifter to body to be sure the shifter is NOT hitting the body when try to get into 'lo'.
LG

Up until this past weekend it would go into both fine so I am pretty sure there is plenty of clearance there. Did not have time on my lunch break yesterday to check the oil levels

Remove the shift lever 'boots' on the floorboard.
Now-Try shifting the t'case lever and see what you can see.
Not uncommon for the lever to hit the forward edge of the body cut out when pushing forward for 4-LO.

I will check it. From the info I have provided, does it sound like there could be anything wrong inside the tcase or are we just trying to rule out the easy fixes first

Baby-steps.
Eliminate the 'easy', first. ;)
Do you have a body lift on the Jeep??
LG

No lift

THX-good to know.
I'm start'n to wonder if you have a bad engine or tranny mount, maybe.
You said it would engage before--
What work/mods have you done to this Jeep?
LG

Well I adjusted the timing after it had a small engine fire from a short in the ignition coil. But it didn't get that hot I was able to put it out pretty quick. Replaced ignition coil, starter, distributor cap and rotors and adjusted the timing, and tweaked air fuel on carb to get it to quit dying when I would stop. Rerouted some fuel lines and wiring to be more functional. That is all that has been done since it last worked

Adjusting the timing wouldn't affect shifting the tcase would it?

The heat MIGHT have affected you engine mounts etc.
That MIGHT affect the position of the driveline.
Pull the shift boots and see what your clearance issue is.
What caused the fire?
LG

Ignition short by a small fuel leak then a melted fuel hose

DANG- Glad you saved it.
I carry a FireX just for that reason------

Checked the tcase level and it is low or at least I need to add to it. Could not feel any oil. I know this is at least part of my problem what type of tcase juice do y'all recommend?

I use 75w80 gear oil

what is a good factory shop manual? and would Oreilly's Auto parts have it?

Try to find a manual that was printed the year before your CJ was built! lol serious though. look on ebay for a "factory service manual" the older the better IMO.
