I know this is a cj forum but I have a quetion reguarding YJ's. My brother wants to buy a jeep and found a 93 that has some good aftermarket upgrads. It has an automatic tranny in it though. How do you feel about that? I dont think he is leaning one way or the other. Are those Transmission known to be junk or are they strong and reliable? Thanks for the help
Wish he would buy a real jeep with round headlight though

Re: Auto or 5speed?

I have a 5 speed in my 90 but I have never heard anything bad about the automatics.

Which engine? My 95 YJ has the 2.5l with AX5 5 speed, 30" tires and stock 4.10 gearing. It will run 60-65 without a problem, on flat land. We don't have much in the way of hills around here, but even the moderate ones tend to bog it down in 5th. I'm thinking an auto and a 2.5, especially if you want to lift it and go bigger tires might be a little anemic.

I agree with KenB.
If you have the 2.5 L I4 your best bet would be a 5 speed.
