Suspension Yj spring swap on only the front?

Hi All,
I have a 1981 CJ8 and am in the process of restoring it, while I have the body off I am thinking about doing some suspension work, my front springs seem to be a bit flattened so I was thinking about replacing them. I see a lot of people recommend a Yj spring swap and I'm interested but I have a few Questions. Could I replace only the front springs with Yj springs? The back springs are the same so does replacing them make a difference? Also if it does make a difference how much do the back springs actually affect the ride and handling? lastly, how much does a Yj spring change the height? I can put in shackles to compensate but it would be helpful to know.

YJ springs are very different when it comes to compression, rebound, torsion and other things. Plus they really require different shocks.
I would not do 1/2 a swap as it would really affect handling. BUT, since you're in an 8 you may not notice it as much.
IMHO, while you have everything apart and have to do the front I would do a complete YJ upgrade. The difference is astronomical and your back / butt / off-road capabilities will thank you...

I'm going to jump in on this thread- is there a difference in ride height with the YJ springs on a CJ5 ? I understand the length of spring changes but what about the height? Trying to decide on stock YJ springs or 2" lift springs.

I need new springs for my resto - might as well do the upgrade while everything is torn apart.
