Just watched a 'best of' special on the History Channel... the 1911 came out on top! :notworthy:

Kinda makes me proud to own one... :)

Thoughts?

I would love to own a 1911! The 45cal has great stopping power. I have shot many different manufactures that build them. That and my granddad always said he would rather take a 45 into combat than any other gun. I would have to say that is all that needs to be said!:D

That's why I own 2.
One for home and one for pistol comp's.

Why the military ever went to a 9mm i'll never know.
Ever notice people who defend the 9mm always say "it carries more bullets."
I'm sorry but if I dump a full clip out of my .45 and there are still people coming
or didn't leave I have bigger problems than lack of bullets.

Ask those who have put rounds in people, a human isn't that easy to kill.
I want knock down power, that's why I keep hydrashock's in mine for home defense.

Oh as for combat, give me a shot gun.
Point and shoot, knock down, varied ammo, and anything you shoot
is generally within shotgun range.

I agree with them.
You can't beat it for stopping power at close range.

The thing I like about 45s is the hole it makes going in is bigger than most 9mms expands to.
I carry a 45acp and hunt with a 45/70 Ruger #1.:D
I shoot my own loads and load down for deer (350gr hp at 1500 fps) and load up for heavier game (405gr at 1800 fps). There is nothing in North America I can't stop with it.:D

I love Glocks, was just shooting my buddies the other day
but you pull out the old S&W 1911, put in a clip, fire a few rounds and you know you have a gun in your hand. Accurate, easy handling, and has the reputation of working when all others fail. I love them.
Ever notice also, when you pull it out at the range, how many of your friends really want to shoot it? They are just cool.

I was trained on one, and have had one in one form or another as my conastant companion for 30 years. My current well worn and reliable friend.

And the Home Land Security team.

Whats funny is at the range you hear pow, pow, pow, from the 9mm crowd. Then Boom, Boom, Boom, people are like wtf and look down to see what your shooting.
I like the hydrashocks as they don't plug like a hollow point and mushroom every time.

Also funny the military went through all this testing to find the perfect sidearm, then swap to a 9mm after the .45 has long proven it's worth.

When I used to board vessels we all carried .45 and either some sub-machinegun or a shotgun.

Military "PC" .........The appeasement of the NATO groupies = 9mm

Damn military "PC"
I'm of the opinion shoot the bad guy with what ever you want.
After all he's the bad guy!

LMAO! I didn't think this thread would stir this kind of thought... But what the hell! It's great that it did!

Baja - Your right! The 1911 just works! And everyone wants to shoot it!

Brock! The pow pow pow sound of the 9mm (and yes - I do own several 9mm's) is nothing compared to the 45 BOOM! I love it! :)

wanna know my favorite gun? a 45 single action revolver.

however, I did shoot a friends 38 single shot his grandfather had owned, after 3 shots I had it nailed and was doing some great tight groups, put about 24 rounds through that thing and have to say it was one of the nicest guns I had ever shot, and I do not even remember the make or model. But boy was it a nice shooting gun, let him play with the 1911 as I kept pullo\ing in my target just to smirk at the groups I was making and ask for another 6 rounds.

The big question is, where can you get that ammo these days? Seems that just about every on line place has it, then it is out of stock.

there is a new sales rep in the country, It seems that Mr. Obama has the potential to make it more difficult to buy ammo some time in the future so every body is hording and stock piling. Or so I have been told by the local arms dealer.

Quick history question, does anyone know who originally designed the 1911 & how it got its model number??

The pistol was used by the army starting in 1911, thus the name if I remember my class correctly. The overall design hsn't changed much since then, but went through a ton of design testing and tweaking up until then.

Not sure on the maker, but I would imagine one of hte big players back then. Colt, S&W, maybe the guy who made the machine gun around that time... not sure.

The legendary John Browning. :notworthy: Actually, the US didn't like it at first.
