My wife came home last night and told me there was a Jeep for sale just down the road from us. She said I was having so much fun with my 75, that maybe I should go look at it so that I had another project lined up when the 75 was finished. Did she just tell me I could get another Jeep?

Anyway, I went and looked at it this AM and it's a 1952 M38a1. It's a little rough, but not as rough as my 75 was when I started. The engine has been replaced with an International 4 cylinder, but other than that is pretty much original. No top, no doors. If I got it, I think it would be a stock restoration project. The guy is asking $1500.

So the question is whether that's a fair price and am I nuts?

Thanks, Bill

If a stock restoration is the plan I would look closely at the engine swap that has been done. It may be very difficult to reverse. Cant say much about the price as I'm in Canada but maybe low ball him for fun and if you miss out on it oh well, you have a nice 75 in the garage!

I forgot my camera this AM, so went back this afternoon and took some pics. The engine is a 60's IH 152 out of a Scout. Overall, there is not a lot of rust. There a couple of holes in the rear bed where it looks like something was dropped in it. The floor boards are solid. The underside looked pretty clean for a 60 year old vehicle. Was orginally a USMC Jeep, then used by the Delano County Water District, then as a ranch rig for the past few years.

The only question is does it run? I don't know how hard it is to get parts for the IH 152, or carb that is on it. I would also ask the owner if he has the original motor, always worth asking. If it runs I would buy it!:)

It seems to run pretty good, sounds good. The carb needs to be rebuilt. I think the guy said it was a Holley. Doesn't have the original motor. Needs the brakes worked on, some wiring work where the mice chewed on it, tires, choke cable and just a lot of cleaning. Think I'm going to go for it.
