1966 CJ5 Farm Jeep (All Stock)
I am new to jeeps and pretty much to mechanics in general but I recently acquired a 1966 Farm Jeep CJ5 with front and rear PTO the front PTO is connected to a winch and there are hydraulics on the back and front of the jeep the front hydraulics being attached to a snowplow lift (I have the blade for it but I'm not sure how it attaches). The jeep is in ok shape but does need in my opinion to have a frame off restoration since the body is a bit rough to really be a sharp. The question I have is where to start? The jeep hasn't been used in 10 years but was supposedly parked in the weeds where I pulled it from. There is an extra straight four motor in the back of it but I'm not sure the condition of the one under the hood. It looks relatively clean under the hood, but I don't have the key for it since the owner couldn't find it although I do have the title. Also I'm wondering if it is possible to boost the speed on it to highway drivability without ruining it as a classic farm jeep? Any advice would be appreciated as I really have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks in advance.

This will make a good place to start.
:ww:from the republic of Texas.
You could not have chosen a better vehicle to learn about the internal combustion engine and all the peripherals that can be associated with it. It just doesn't get any simpler that this.
I doubt that your CJ will ever be a highway cruiser but you never know.
If you have the aptitude, the attention span, the creativity and the disposable income you are well on your way on the path to enlightenment. many step up, few can keep up.
Rest assured that if you can bring this machine back to it's full potential, whatever you decide that is, you will find that all men envy you and all women will want you.
All this said do you own a set of wrenches and have you found some variation of a service manual?? Do you have a place in out of the rain and snow??

I want to add 2 things to IOs post
first, you can get a new ignition switch with keys cheap, do that
second, you have a unique jeep with all those PTOs and Hydraulics I would not try to ruin the jeep by trying to get the hiway speed up, but instead enjoy it as it is. I can guide you through a lot of stuff unique to early cj5s. I personally love the Pre 72s (early CJ5s) and do a lot of the mechanics on mine myself
but please start here http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f49/what-do-after-getting-cj-home-3563/
PS, we can get an Overdrive unit in there but that is a project you need to save up 2 grand toward

WELCOME you have come to the right place.

the most important thing before you do anything is to go ahead and order 3 repair manuals like a haynes book or something. 1 for your bathroom. 1 for beside your bed. and one to leave in the jeep haha. you should read on this every time you get a chance. reading a couple pages every night can make your jeep experience stress free and fun. these manuals will explain all kinds of ways to trouble shoot things and will teach you what noises mean what and what bolts go where haha. they can tell you almost everything and if not they will educate you enough to be able to give us clear detailed questions so we can easily answer you.

DONT FORGET TO TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING YOU DO AND POST THEM UP. WE LOVE PICS.

Hey so I had some trouble getting the jeep from the property where I obtained it from. Its a little hard to move a jeep as a poor college student. I finally am getting it moved down from MD to my uncle's shop here in TN where I can get at it on the weekends. I was wondering where do I buy the manuals mentioned? Also I did get up there to see it a few times and was able to put in a new ignition I bought for it and so now I have a key for it. I was able with my new ignition to try and turn it over with a battery I borrowed from a tractor on the farm where it is atm and it does indeed turn over. However there is no spark coming to the spark plugs. I held them close to some metal and there is no arc not a thing although the jeep is trying really hard to start up. Any thoughts on where I should start looking? I put up all the pictures I have of it on flicker you can have a look here Flickr: Jeep Newb's Photostream if you like and tell me what you think.

Thanks So Much

Sounds like a pretty rare find! I would seriously concider keeping this CJ in it's original form, if that is not the CJ of your dreams then look into selling to fund the one you do want to own. It may have more value to a collector in as in condition. Just something to think about.

I thought about selling it to see about maybe getting something thats in better shape. But one I don't have a clue what its worth. It was given to me. Two since I don't know what its worth I have no idea if I could get enough to get something better. Three I've just had a ball working on it the few times I've gotten to due to availability its a blast to tinker with although I have wondered if this is over my head. I guess I'll know more once I get it down here next week where I can actually play with it. I do need an actual vehicle more atm however. So if you have thoughts on that I'd love to hear what you have to say.

I agree with Sasquach, try to keep it original. It may surprise you what some collector might be willing to pay for it.

I do not know what it's worth but with some research you should be able to find out. Go ahead and tinker with it and have some fun learning about it. Try researching the earlycj5 site as I have seen farm stuff come up there at times.
