We have a '70 CJ5 . We tow our Jeep with us to the mountains a lot. Recently, we are having issues when we hook up the jeep to our '01 Dodge Ram. (have the same issues when hooked to '93 Chevy P/up) Lights work ok until you use the turn signal. Both tail lights and brake light on the campershell flash and the tail lights on the jeep also. It doesn't matter if it is left or right.

The jeep works fine when its not hooked up.

The Dodge and Chevy work fine when not hooked to the Jeep.

We have towed other things ( 3 different trailers ) with the Dodge and the Chevy and have no issues.

Can anyone help? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1970 CJ5 ?

Thank you for reading this thread. Any help would be well appreciated.

To flat tow a CJ, you have to unplug the rear light harness, at least on mine anyway. Flat towing is hard on the Transfer Case lubrication also, if you are not aware of that you might want to look that up, I have heard of them getting pretty hot. Removing the rear drive shaft is one solution. The rear light harness is located under the dash near the emergency brake. Wiring diagrams are pretty much a must to work on a CJ, they can be found online or in some repair manuals. I have even seen them with plastic overlays.

I know that using THESE means more work, yet it takes out the possible troublesome wiring problems that we have. I use these when I tow mine.

Thanks! We do remove the drive shaft when towing long distances. Also while troubleshooting we realized that we could unplug the pigtail under the hood. We just dont know why it didnt have any problems until recently..... We will let you know if we figure anything else out...... Happy Jeeping!!!
